The dates per the Minnesota Hockey site are March 26, 27 & 28. Not sure when the coaches decide on the players for the teams but I believe the rosters are released right after the State tourney.

Were do you find the rosters?

Already done, they are taking College-Committed players this year.

They have done that in the past (or at least for the last couple years).

However, from the Great 8 tourney, they select the kids for the Chicago Showcase... and they don't invite kids with college commitments. Since they won't be going to the Chicago Showcase this year (there is a local tournament they'll be playing in), I'm not sure if they're going to be allowing committed players or not.

We are looking for the best 8 teams to participate, to do this, we are allowing all D-1 signees to participate. That also means these players will be allowed to play in the Great 8. More information and costs will be sent out.

What is the Minnesota Select 18 team? Is that a new level based on 1992 birth year (or would it be 1991)? Do players get nominated by their coaches for that team and then tryout? I've never heard of it until now.

Good catch pioneer... I hadn't seen the 2010 brochure yet. I think that will help the event re-establish itself as the premier scouting event for high school seniors. I have heard from various scouts that the Chicago Showcase had become watered down and wasn't the event that it used to be.

I believe the Select 18 team will consist of 92 birth years since this year's Advanced 17 program is for the 93s. Just a guess though. Not sure if it will only consist of 92 birth years that don't otherwise qualify via the Great 8?? Does anybody know?

TRUST ME. A PARENT ALLOWING MY KID TO PLAY IN THE GREAT 8. THIS IS A JOKE. MOST SCOUTS ARE LOOKING FOR MAYBE ONE OR TWO KIDS TO PLAY AT A DIVISION THREE LEVEL. THIS IS NOT A DIVISION ONE LEVEL OF PLAY. IF YOUR SON HAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY IN THE USHAL LEVEL, FORGO THE GREAT 8. THE GREAT 8 DOESN'T GET THE BETTER PLAYERS. WHO HAS COME OUT OF THE GREAT 8 PLAY?? NO ONE.

There were oodles of USHL and NAHL scouts at last year's Great 8. For the kids that have made it this far - and don't have a college commitment - the reality sets in that they are going to have to grind it out in juniors if they want to continue their hockey careers. I wouldn't consider it a joke at all. Most kids consider it an honor to be one of the top players in their section, whether it's A or AA.

If your son is still thinking he's going to get a DI deal at this stage of the game, it's time to start concentrating on grades. If they are going to get one now, chances are very good that it won't come until they've proven themselves at the junior level. This is a great opportunity to open doors into the junior level.

Explain to me how the best players from each team can be chosen? From what I understand your coach nominates you and the coaches of the section pick you. How do these coaches even know this player unless you played against them, which you couldn't possibly play against all of them, or your coach calls up and pimps you. Some coaches I am sure are too lazy to do that. So we are going strictly on stats, and that doesnt always go to the best player. Its too bad. There will be some very good players that wont even get a chance to be seen because they had a few less points. But I guess its all about the points in this game. By the way, even if a junior team likes you, your still going to have to ante up the tryout fee and try to make theyre squad, and any one with a decent application can tryout for the nahl or the mnjhl. you just have to fork up the cash.

That is preposterous. In today's day and age (information highway), there aren't too many kids that get missed for something like this. There might be some hard decisions to make, but those that are deserving - for the most part - will get a good look.

And yes, even those that are tendered or drafted still have to try out for junior teams.

Lakeviewing this is a crazy post, 3 section seven players went d-1 after being scouted at the great 8 last year, 2 recruited at the tourney. There were several D-1 Schools (UMD, Bemidji, Providence, Miami, Air Force, U of M and probaly another 1/2 dozen), USHL, NAHL, as well as many D-3 schools were represented there.
I am not saying this is a better opportunity than to go play in the USHL but don't suggest this isn't a great opportunity for a kid to be seen and noticed.

Explain to me Why they are letting the College Committed kids play this year? If is only for the MN Senior Showcase why not just make a team of those College committed kids and leave the Great 8 for the uncommitted kids to get another look. They want the best tourney possible, the Great 8 Team won last year in Chicago. They had no comitted kids in it.

Youngblood, college-committed kids have always been allowed to play in the Great 8. However, they have not been allowed to play in the Chicago Showcase.

Because it is a great way for a kid who is college committed and not drafted in the USHL to get seen by all the USHL teams.

Yes, one kid, lets see, 16 Sections, A and AA combined for THE GREAT 8, 15 kids per roster equals 240 skaters. At this point, one kid, please go to school and get educated to be an educated member of the working force to pay for my social security.

I believe Alex McLean and Ben Persian got offers from Air Force and an Baker from Edina got an offer from Holy Cross just last year alone. I think there were a few more and don't know about D3 teams.
