Class A Rankings 2-14-10
Posted: Sat Feb 13, 2010 10:45 pm
The toughest part about the Class A rankings this year is the very few common games between the top teams.
Next week I will be giving a breakdown by section as well with sections just around the corner. Good luck to all teams.
1. St Thomas Academy (19-4)
The Cadets have an opportunity to end the year with a second consecutive conference title (although it will be shared). Both of their games this week are home games and if they win both they will have a 15 game win streak going into sections with Mahtomedi the probable #2 seed.
-This week: South St Paul (Tues, 7:30pm), Mahtomedi (Thurs, 7:30pm)
2. Breck (20-2)
In the Mustang’s 15 games this year, 3 have given them a game. Of those 3, they won 2 and lost 1. The wins were by a total of 3 goals. Personally, I feel they will get exposed at state and if Hermantown or Warroad hadn’t had a couple bumps, they’d probably replace Breck here.
-This week: St Paul Saints (Tues, 7:30pm), Totino-Grace (Thurs, 7:30pm), @Blake (Sat, 2pm)
3. Mahtomedi (18-5)
While they will probably end the season with 6 losses, the Zephyrs have only lost to 3 teams all season. They have beaten some good teams in both classes and their losses were tight. Their 4 losses this year were by a total of 8 goals. They beat Virginia this year and Burnsville last year.
-This week: @Simley (Tues, 7:30pm), @St Thomas (Thurs, 7:30pm)
4. Warroad (17-4)
The Warriors are playing good hockey as of late. Hermantown’s recent slips along with their Denfeld/Marshall score comparisons bring Warroad up.
-This week: @Lake of the Woods (Tues, 7:30pm)
5. Hermantown (20-3)
Overtime games with Cloquet and Denfeld? I’m not sure what that does to the 5A seedings, being that it’s so close to the end of the season.
-This week: Duluth Central (Tues, 7:30pm), Hibbing (Fri, 7:30pm)
6. Alexandria (17-5-1)
Possibly too big of a jump for the Cardinals, but now on a ten game winning streak, they should have the top seed in 6A locked up.
-This week: @River Lakes (Tues, 7pm), @Moorhead (Fri, 7:30pm)
7. International Falls (14-7-2)
The Broncos are playing well as of late. If Virginia loses to Hibbing this week, they could end up with the top seed in 7A.
-This week: Roseau (Tues, 7:30pm), Fort Frances (Fri, 7:30pm)
8. Sartell-St Stephen (16-6-2)
They would be a few spots higher as beating Virginia definitely helps, but losing to Alexandria drops them below them. The Brainerd game on Tuesday will be a big game for both teams.
-This week: @Brainerd (Tues, 7pm)
9. Virginia (15-6-3)
The Blue Devils are doing well as of late; they beat Hibbing and they should be the top seed and have their state destiny in their hands.
-This week: @Hibbing (Tues, 7:30pm)
10. Thief River Falls (16-7)
Losing to Roseau by 1 goal in Roseau is definitely good. Two away games this week will help prepare them for sections and probably a top two seed.
-This week: @EGF (Tues, 7:30pm), @Bemidji (Thurs, 7:30pm)
11. Rochester Lourdes (13-7-3)
They deserve respect and I have trouble gauging how high to raise them by good losses, but their losses to Breck/St Thomas do show they should not be left out of consideration for a first round upset at state should they make it.
-This week: @Mankato West (Tues, 7:30pm), Totino-Grace (Sat, 7:30pm)
12. Sauk Rapids-Rice (11-10-1)
Going back to their older goalie they lost a bad game to Alex and put the younger back in against Brainerd and kept it close. Hopefully they decide to have the younger goalie start at their section games.
-This week: St Cloud Apollo (Tues, 7pm), St Cloud Tech (Thurs, 7pm), @Pine City (Sat, 7:30pm)
13. New Prague (14-6-2)
Coming out of the Missota, it’s quite tough to know how good this team is. Their two most recent losses are both to Holy Angels, and they recently tied Lourdes. They will be a top 4 team in 1A and, having beaten Albert Lea, probably top 2 behind Lourdes.
-This week: @Northfield (Tues, 7:30pm), Hutchinson (Fri, 7pm)
14. Totino-Grace (12-9-1)
The Eagles have 3 big away games this week. The first will probably decide their section seed and the others help prepare them for sections. Tying Benilde helps a lot, but they still have to get through Spring Lake Park this week.
-This week: @Spring Lake Park (Tues, 7:30pm), @Breck (Thurs, 7:30pm), @Rochester Lourdes (Sat, 7:30pm)
15. Hibbing (11-9-2)
Hibbing has HUGE games this week. They may control their own destiny in section seeding, it’s tough to tell. It’s definitely a four team race that could go any way.
-This week: Virginia (Tues, 7:30pm), @Hermantown (Fri, 7:30pm)
16. Delano (15-7-1)
The Tigers would be higher if they hadn’t lost to Litchfield of tied Cathedral. It would be much easier to rank them in they played more section opponents, like Breck or Blake.
-This week: @Mound-Westonka (Fri, 7pm)
17. St Cloud Cathedral (14-7-1)
Tying Delano kept the conference title a reality for the Crusaders, and they have a shot at only losing one of their games prior to the start of sections.
-This week: Mound-Westonka (Tues, 7:15pm), Waconia (Thurs, 7:15pm), @Duluth Marshall (Sat, 3:30pm)
18. Duluth Marshall (10-12-1)
The Hilltoppers are definitely not a team to count out. They have played many good teams this season and have tournament experience. While they are not a favorite, it would not be a surprise to see them in the 7A final.
-This week: St Cloud Cathedral (Sat, 3:30pm)
19. Spring Lake Park (18-5)
Losing to Totino-Grace by one then losing to Mahtomedi by one is confusing. Hopefully for them they beat Totino the second time around and get the 3rd seed in 4A.
-This week: Totino-Grace (Tues, 7:30pm), @Brainerd (Sat, 4pm)
20. Blake (16-7)
I figured I’d keep them in the top 20 for one more week, but losing to St Paul Johnson really doesn’t help them right now.
-This week: @Providence Academy (Tues, 7pm), Breck (Sat, 2pm)
Bubble Teams:
1A
Faribault (17-6)
While their loss to Lourdes tells me they aren’t a threat to win state or as far as state rankings go, they are a top 4 team in a section, so they deserve to be mentioned. The Falcons are 9-2 in their last 11 games, but both losses are to section opponents. They’ll have to beat multiple teams they’ve already lost to to hold onto a chance at making it to state.
-This week: Rochester Mayo (Thurs, 7:30pm), @St Peter (Sat, 7pm)
Red Wing (11-11)
While I have to admit they have gone unnoticed by me all season, and I’m not ranking them due to their loss to recently above .500 Albert Lea, the Wingers have a shot at wide open 1A.
-This week: @Mankato East (Mon, 5:30pm), Rochester Mayo (Tues, 7:30pm), Austin (Thurs, 7:30pm)
3A
Redwood Valley (17-3-1)
A couple slips this week for the Cardinals, but they are probably still a top 4 seed in the section. It would be great to see them make it to the X.
-This week: St Peter (Thurs, 7:15pm), Minneapolis West (Sat, 3pm)
Litchfield (12-8)
Probably not a top team in state, but a top 4 team in their section with a realistic shot at getting to the X like they did two years ago.
-This week: New Ulm (Mon, 7pm), @Waconia (Tues, 7pm), @Holy Family Catholic (Thurs, 7pm)
5A
Duluth Denfeld (12-10-2)
While I doubt the Hunters have a good chance of winning this week, they will finish the season above .500 and not be a team to count out of any game in sections.
-This week: Grand Rapids (Tues, 7:30pm)
6A
Detroit Lakes (15-7-2)
The Lakers definitely the favorite to win any games past the quarterfinals, but they are not a team to overlook either. I would guess they’ll end up with a top 4 seed in sections.
-This week: @Bemidji (Tues, 7:30pm)
8A
East Grand Forks (11-13)
Nothing new here; the Green Wave definitely are hard to rank as they have beaten the Warriors but have lost to Crookston. They will probably get the #3 seed and have to upset TRF to have a shot at the Warriors again.
-This week: Thief River Falls (Tues, 7:30pm)
