Private School Recruitment Witnessed?

We've read or at least I have, 3,000 posts that claim the private schools recruit and that kids ONLY go to private schools for hockey.

Can anyone give us ONE example of a Private School coach or administrator being present at a Bantam Hockey game and then approaching a player/parent and saying "you/your son needs to come to Holy Smokes High School"

I honestly have heard the claims, but haven't witnessed the action.
has anyone? or is this claim just a baseless exageration to explain why some schools happen to have more success than others?

Is it possible that some parents simply want their kids to have a private education or is it just hockey 100% of the time?

I know plenty of hockey players that grew up attending catholic elementary/middle schools, and then simply did the same in high school.

Recruiting happens, but you can't say that there aren't other reasons to go along with it. If you can pay for it, why not? You get to play for a good team, egt a good education, and end up with a good set up for college. You may lose that pride that comes from playing for the city you grew up in, but that's the deal breaker.

Flatontheice,
I could not agree more and especially the last of the poll about weed.
How sarcastic.
Site Admin. should take this one down. My son went to a private and it wasn't all about hockey. Basketball, baseball are no exceptions.

Come on. We all know that the reason parents send kids to private schools isn't for the education, public school pitfalls, the athletics, or the religious aspect. It is obviously for all the hardcore drugs. I am totally joking if you didn't catch that sarcasm.

Like WBL said most kids who go the a private high school went to a private school their whole lives. Yes sometimes kids will go to a private school for athletics. Do the coaches necessarily recruit? No the kid will go there because they have a good track record. I am not saying that coaches don't recruit either.

I can't wait to discuss this in a month and a half during section play off times :)

This could be a very good discussion, if we could keep the spam away.

I don't see it going that way though. :|

Also, why would you not put a poll option "A good education"....?

Just so everyone is aware, as an alumni of a private high school I too voted for the best weed in town. That is the only reason to choose a high school. That is why I am the way I am......
Way to post an ignorant topic!!!

Oddly enough, I find myself in agreement with just about everything posted on this thread so far.

There are five basic reasons why students go to private schools (I am stealing this from something I wrote for a class once):

A. Prestige/status/legacy
B. Better education
C. Better extracurriculars/athletics
D. Existence of certain programs/curricula not available in public schools
E. Religious reasons

Anyone who doesn't recognize all these factors at play needs to look again.

I don't think it's that blatant. It's more like you get a letter asking you to attend a "get to know our school better" party, hosted at home by parents - a prominent family with a player on the varsity team. Maybe they were part of your community association before they left for private. Regardless, they know about your kid, and you know about their kid, even though you've never met. You feel honored to be asked, you attend, you might be "sold" on the experience. The coaches come to a Bantam game to watch your kid, feedback is given as to whether he/she might make Varsity...

One of my kids got such an invite...my other kids didn't. Can you guess who the "elite" player was?

Zam, I think the offering of the "weed" option was a tip-off that this wasn't a serious topic. It's what I voted for, also. Image

Well at least the private schoolers are educated enough to know to put on shoes when it's below zero.

No coach is dumb enough to recruit blatantly in front of of anyone. The recruiting is done by parents of current or former players. Why else did I witness parents without a child on the team attend no less than 8 bantam hockey games last year. Believe me, recruiting is taking place its just not being conducted by the coaches.

when people take polls like this for what it's worth... they can be entertaining... after all... up to 32 votes so far.. I haven't seen that much response for a poll in a long time.

I agree to take it down, it was a legit poll until the OP decided to throw the crack about the weed in there and most people voted for that.

Why poison your own poll?
