A Rankings for 1-3-09

After the last week teams have really leveled out and records have improved. Some teams have really disappointed. Questions/comments/suggestions welcome.

1. St Thomas Academy (6-3)
Only losses to two of the top teams in state.
-This week: Hill Murray (Thurs, 7:30pm), @Richfield (Sat, 3pm)

2. Breck (7-1)
VERY good showing at Schwan’s Cup, with 3 games at the X. Issue now is their schedule can only hurt them in rankings.
-This week: Minnehaha (Tues, 7:30pm), @Providence Academy (Sat, 3pm)

3. Warroad (9-1)
One fumble, and with Cathedral’s mishaps lately, a win doesn’t mean as much as it would have with a win over Lourdes.
-This week: @East Grand Forks (Tues, 7:30pm), St Cloud Cathedral (Fri, 7:30pm), St Cloud Tech (Sat, 2:15pm)

4. Mahtomedi (6-3)
Great showing at Schwan’s Cup with a close game with Breck, OT wins, and win over Virginia. If they are the opposite side of the bracket as Breck at state and Breck loses, look for them to contend.
-This week: @Totino-Grace (Tues, 7pm), Bloomington Kennedy (Thurs, 7:30pm), @Henry Sibley (Sat, 7:30pm)

5. Hermantown (8-1)
Only fumble against poor AA team. Great performance against #6 TRF. Play five good teams these next two weeks.
-This week: @Duluth Marshall (Tues, 7:30pm), @International Falls (Sat, 3pm

6. Thief River Falls (8-3)
Only losses to #3, #5 teams, and good AA Roseau. Have another AA test this week that could move them down with other team’s wins.
-This week: @Kittson Central (Tues, 7:00pm), @Moorhead (Thurs, 7:30pm)

7. Virginia (7-5-2)
Losses to #4, #5 and to two quality AA opponents.
-This week: Albert Lea (Fri, 7:30pm), Rochester Mayo (Sat, 3:15pm)

8. Wilmar (8-1)
Good games this week. Big win over falling Alexandria.
-This week: Sartell (Tues, 7pm), @St Cloud Tech (Thurs, 7pm), Detroit Lakes (Fri, 7pm)

9. Duluth Denfeld (7-3-1)
Great showing at Duluth Invite. Good games this week.
-This week: @Duluth Central (Tues, 7:30pm) Cloquet (Thurs, 6pm), Rogers (Sat, 3pm)

10. Blake (7-4)
Losses to #4, #6 and quality AA teams. Like Breck, only thing their schedule can do to them is bring them down. Only quality teams left are Minnetonka and Breck.
-This week: @St Paul Como Park (Thurs, 8pm), @St Paul Academy (Sat, 2pm)

11. Duluth Marshall (7-4)
No quality wins, only quality losses. Chance for quality win(s) this week. Beating a team Warroad lost to would be great for them.
-This week: Hermantown (Tues, 7:30pm), Grand Rapids (Sat, 3pm)

12. Spring Lake Park (12-0)
Still undefeated. It was difficult deciding where to place them. A win against Benilde would help them out a lot.
This week: @Hayward, WI (Tues, 7pm), @Irondale (Thurs, 7:30pm), Benilde (Sat, 7:30pm)

13. Rogers (5-3-1)
HUGE win at the Bronze Cup including wins over Orono and Hudson. Only losses to AA teams. Top 3 seed in 5A for sure, maybe #2 after this week with win over Denfeld.
-This week: @Cambridge-Isanti (Thurs, 7pm), @Duluth Denfeld (Sat, 3pm)

14. Orono (7-3)
Still no impressive wins, but good losses. This week is their time to go up in the rankings or drop off and let Mound have their time.
-This week: @Litchfield (Tues, 7:30pm), Hopkins (Thurs, 7pm), Mound-Westonka (Sat, 3pm)

15. St Cloud Cathedral (6-2)
Only quality games are losses. Look for the next two weeks to show a lot about what they can do.
-This week: Holy Family Catholic (Tues, 7:15pm), @Warroad (Fri, 7:30pm), @Bemidji (Sat, 6pm)

Thought I'd beat Karl as it's only been 1-3-09 for 11 minutes, but he posted before the date...cheater

Lourdes at 15? According to the Hub, they lost to Cathedral 5-3..

The Virginia/Mahtomedi game was closer than the score showed the shots were 40 a piece and Mahtomedi had an empty net goal at the end. But the rankings look good!

the hub and ftp are right while minnesota-scores.net is wrong on a score...yet again.

Only thing that would change is Lourdes off and someone else, maybe Cathedral, on. I'll check tomorrow. I really struggled with the 15 spot; as most of the teams about had a holiday tournament and Cathedral didn't, it would be difficult to put them in, we'll see.

bluedevils,

Thanks. Regardless of play, tough to put 5 losses above the teams ahead of Virginia. Virginia is still set up to be at least the #2 seed at sections, depending on how their game against Marshall goes.

 I guess I'm getting too fast at this.

Though normally I'm on eastern time when I post mine, so it's usually a little ways into Sunday when they go up.

Karl, just a friendly reminder that when you vote, it's for Spring Lake Park, not St. Louis Park.. I am sure you are "ok" after grueling finals, but just thought I would remind you...

I love you, man!!!

Don't be too hard on Minnesota-scores. They are only as good as the people who report the scores to them. The same score appears on Minnesota Sports Online and gamefacemn.com... all three use the same database. If you click on game summary, the correct score is reported.

 I just looked up St. Louis Park...they're 2-9, with a 17-0 loss to Edina on the schedule...looks like the name is the only thing people will be confusing between these two teams this year.

defense, you are right. This is why I use games that have happened in the past to make my rankings, not the future.

Wilmar beat an Alex team most had ranked while Sartell tied the team I had at #13 and lost to the teams I had at #14 and #15. Things are very tough with teams with lots of wins and not much of a schedule. Wilmar will probably drop a bit this week and Sartell will probably rise if others fall.

While Sartell did tie Alexandria 5-5, Willmar beat them 3-2.....
Sartell had a tough holiday and has yet to have a HUGE win. I would call Willmar's win over Alex pretty big...
I think if you look at Willmar's games so far, you will realize that they had a nice schedule to start with, something like a certain major college football team in this state annually has. Sartell on the other hand has actually played some real strong teams this year.
The point is not that you have Willmar there, it is that Sartell is not. If Willmar is there, Sartell should be pretty close, until this last game, then there is a decision to make. Good luck....

Yes, Sartell will go up. Wilmar will go down. But Sartell does need some help to go very far as teams they have lost and tied to are low as well. Sartell's remaining schedule, though, has few tough games. So they must remain perfect, which is possible.
