Edina Abra Tournament

So big week ahead of Tournaments - who is your favorite here? Edina is likely top team at home and as defending Champion but undefeated Irondale, Hopkins, GRG, Duluth, Lakeville South, Maple Grove or even HM might pull off an upset. Should be great action - here are the game times:

I went with Edina but Hopkins has a strong goalie, Irondale has some nice players but has not really been tested yet. Good luck all!! I see there will be some more good teams in Eden Prairie at the same time just a few miles away should make for some good hockey this next week,

I'm pretty sure that this is the only tournament around in which all teams are ranked. I'm sure someone could correct me if I am wrong. So this is probably the best of the bunch?

edina and hopkins are very deep teams, irondale has great forwards with mcdonald and lorence but lack the depth that the other teams have. they also havent been tested much this season, we'll see who's top dog in this tourney

Hats off to the Edina organizers this is a very good field and should be a good set of games - looking at KRACH the #1, 3, 4 teams are in this tournament. Here is overivew of teams:

Maple Grove #41 KRACH 4 W 8 L 1 T - Casey Hirsch is a dangerous Jr Forward
Hill Murray #16 7-4-0 - The Brandts-Doyle line and McKeever in goal have to have a big tourney and the other lines have to kick in

Duluth #42 5-7-2 Turner in goal can make a difference
Hopkins #3 9-1-1 This is a very fast deep team with the best goalie in the state

GRG #35 5-6-2 Strong team with two young goalies
Irondale #1 11-0-0 The number #2 McDonald and # 3 Lorence scorers in the state plus a good supporting cast.

Lakeville South #21 7-3-0 Great goaltending
Edina #4 11-3-0 Lots of depth and should have the home ice advantage.

Nice summary Joe. Just an update in that Maple Grove is going to be without their best player. Casey Hirsch was hurt a few weeks ago and is out with a knee injury.

One of my teams came through Northwoods. I said I wanted a pickem for this tourney, but noooo...

Oh wait two teams, Hill won also.

Should be some really nice semi's today. Too bad they aren't one after the other.

The average chick hockey fan has not yet caught on to the cult following that is "pick'em". When they do look out Minnesota

HM - Hopkins

HM 3 - Hopkins 0

Hopkins didn't control the puck and it really wasn't what you would have expected out of the 2 teams imo.

Not sure I understand....Here are the stats from the box score. It was a goalie battle with both goalies playing very well.

Hopkins played well - with great speed - but individual, they didn't seem to have great puck movement.

Hill just kind of played grinder hockey move it and dig it out played well as units.....with the excpetion of Hannah Brandt who put on a great show again.

First: HM-H. Brandt (Fabian), 2:54; HM-H. Brandt (M. Brandt), 8:14. Second: HM-Doyle (Pendleton), 16:25, pp.

Saves:
HM-McKeever 8-5-8--21;
HO-Billadeau 10-4-6--20

Joe, I haven't watched Hill except for the last 2 days. I have watched Hopkins several times before this weekend. I thought they were struggling to move the puck and never really had any flow. Hill was beating Hopkins to the puck regularly.

I just expected the play to be tighter by both teams.

Granted I'm biased as an Irondale dad, but this was a great game to watch. Edina came out flying, scored on their second shot, outshot Irondale 15-4 in the first and looked like they should be up 4-0. Instead it was 2-1. Irondale regrouped in the locker room and played a much better second period outshooting Edina 9-8 and have the better of the action. The third was very even with the goals just going Irondale's way. The first of the third was off a turnover right in the slot that Gina McDonald top shelfed. In fact, both of the first two Irondale goals were unassisted. The third and winning goal came late in the period off a scramble in front of the Edina net. There were plenty of times in this game where Edina forchecked so well it was a 5 on 5 power play. But Jillian McDonald was very solid in nets and Irondale kept most of the shots outside the slot and gave very few odd man (girl?) rushes. Can't say the better team won, but I can say that Irondale kept their perfect season alive and certainly earned this victory. They are a dangerous team that can very well beat anyone in state.

I got there in time to watch the last two periods of the Hill - Hopkins game. I expected Hopkins to dominate more but they never really did. As said above, Hill just beat them to the puck and were able to muck it up enough to win. Some solid goaltending can take you a long way. And after watching Irondale get pounded in their jv game, I came back to watch the end of Lakeville South and Grand Rapids/Greenway. It was very one-sided with Lakeville being a much better team. All-in-all, 4 games for 9 bucks worked out for me. My two favorite teams made the finals and beat Edina and Hopkins. What a fine day of hockey.

I wish I could make the championship game, but it looks unlikely at this point. It should be a real interesting game as Irondale has the snipers and HM is actually the deeper team for once. Will running 2 lines for a third straight day catch up to Irondale as it has for so many other teams? Which goalie will stand up and save the day? My guess is this one will be higher scoring and my morning guess is 5-4 Irondale as they have 2 really solid scoring machines and HM has one. I'll be happy either way so good luck to both teams.

Who would have thought Edina v Hopkins would be the 3rd place game. From what I saw last night, I'd have to give the edge to Edina.
