I am looking for clarification on what the rule is for transferring to a different association when a kid changes schools in December. I have heard if this happens you cannot play at the "A" level for the new association or school for the first year. Is this true? And who ensures the policy is followed? I will give two real life scenarios...Player made the "A" team. Ran into some discipline issues...left the team...switched schools, and is now on that "A"team. Other scenario...Player was clearly "A" level, but did not make the "A" team, switched schools, and was not allowed to be considered for "A" team? Seems like a double standard. Just looking for clarification on this new transfer/participation policy and the many headaches it may create. Thanks.

my two cents if your kid is a good kid. most likely will get the break.. if he has issues you might want to parent him and keep him out of hockey until he has no issues. then he will truely be an A player.

Really think it depends upon the association. Midway through a season is a tough time to bring a new kid in and "assign" them to the A team no matter what their talent level. There is so much that goes into a "team", ie how the kids get along with each other, etc. so your situations are really tough calls. Even if the player is assigned to a B team, again, the season is about half over and the skater would have a chance to tryout for the high school team next year, assuming they are a second year bantam. At that time, the skater could truly prove himself and show where they really belong..........just my 2 cents worth..........

I would like to rephrase my question. Can a kid quit on his team in early December, Join a neighboring association a week or so later at the same "A" level, switch school districts at semester change in early January to allow this to follow the new participation policy? FYI This is not my kid, I only heard about it from my kids who attend school with him. Yes this is a second year Bantam, Yes this kid has Hockey talent, and yes this kid has discipline issues including very poor grades and drug and alcohol use. Is the blame to be put on his parents? I do not know. I have never met them, nor do I know the whole situation. I am just looking for clarification on what the rule is for switching teams and associations after tryouts and team rosters have been set.

If the player is on the first teams roster,then the simple answer is no. If his original team has deleted the player from the roster, not sure.
From what you are describing this kid needs help in more than one area and maybe time off from hockey and getting straightened out would be best.

The registrar for your association would have your answer.

Actually if I was still coaching,this player would not be playing for me until the grades were passing and if there were drug and alcohol issues, he would not be playing until that was straightened out.

If this is the kid I think it is (hypothetically of course), there is a history of not paying the assessments. I don’t think the association will be very happy with him or his father in the long run. The families of the players who are now not getting as much ice time will be vocal. The coach will do what he wants to win. But the joke is on him because this kid is not a team player. The association he left is glad to lose him. Although they have not released him, maybe they don’t have to. I know the family did not move. At the very least he should not be able to play until semester(mid-January). But the rosters have to be final in December. How will this all work?

Doesn't one of the associations up there find a way to make these transfers work out?

I have no idea who you guys are talking about but I have a question....What happens if you have a kid who made the A team and than his family moves in December. hypothetically lets say he moves from Internation Falls to Rochester... The associations are far apart so the kid can't drive to play at his old association and there is no hockey logic behind this move. Say the kids parents have a job transfer. What happens to this kid? Would he be just out of luck when it comes to hockey the rest of the year?

In the case above the kid is not going to Duluth. Most associations have by-laws that address these issues. Generally if you do not try out you go to the lowest level. B1 or B2. It would take an act on the association's board to place a skater at a higher level.
