Kirk Herbstreit, Ohio native and ESPN college football analyst has had, for a few years now, a day of games in which various out-of-state football teams from around the nation play Ohio football teams. Now, I think it would be cool if Minnesota hosted something like this. Of course, the pickings for competition would not be as great as trying to organize a football competition like Herbstreit has. It would still be fun though. Get 5-6 teams playing Michigan, North Dakota, Illinois, and maybe even Massachusetts/New England high school teams and I'm sure it would be a pretty good draw. If you wanted good competition, play, for example EP or Jefferson against Michigan's best team and take a lower-level Minnesota team and have them play the top team from a hockey-poor state, and so on. I think it would be a great draw.

I think the timberwolves did something along the lines of this recently for basketball.

I think it would be great to do a Minnesota V.s Michigan type deal.....because if they think there the state of hockey they could need to prove it and put up or shut up.....

There seems to be a fair amount of interstate play as is. You are correct there still can be more. A Timberwolves Shootout style event may work.

Just remember not many states have a big focus on HS hockey like Minnesota does.

Timberwolves? first this is a hockey board and second who would ever want anything associated with that organization.....

MSHSL has now said it is not fair to have this type of play without a waiver.

I don't want to hurt anyones feelings but if Michigan brought their best team (Belle Tire) to Minnesota to play a High School team, they would shalack the high school team. I mean Belle Tire has 5 players on the USHL 92 draft list.

Belle Tire isn't a high school team.

I get that, but besides Wisconsin no one else has a legitimate High school league. In Michigan any kid that is good enough and has the available money plays AAA. And the kids that don't have the money, many get sponsored.

Even New England and Illinois do not have high school teams. Illinois has AAA and New England has prep schools. So unless you want this whole tournament to be some sort of farce as to how Minnesota has the best hockey by having their teams beat up on little sisters of the poor, I think it would be more interesting to see the top 5 or 6 teams in the state play against some of the best teams from each state (Belle Tire, CYA, Grand Forks RR). And if the Minnesota teams beat Belle Tire and CYA it would be great, but if they didn't, they wouldnt have anything to be ashamed of because technically they shouldn't since they are all-star teams.

Unless Mass. has changed in the past years. The players play on their teams before the High school season and after the season is over they reform their teams. In Illinois you used to be able to roster on both the AAA team and High school.

Uh, Brandy38 in his initial post on the thread. He's a little off though in that he says "recently". The Timberwolves Shootout has been going for about 10 years. A great event.

You are the only one that inferred a Timberwolves sponsorship for the hockey event. Given that they do one for basketball, maybe the Wild could step up to be the sponsor for this. If not, it could make it unsponsored or with something in a different area. Like Brandy says, Herbstreit has his name on one for Ohio football.

Nice idea - I don't see this ever happening in MN for HS hockey. Too many good teams in MN to play.

Unlike basketball and football where there are several top/proven media outlets ranking the top national teams, there is no national press coverage for hs hockey, like the [i]USA Today[/i] Top 25 National rankings, along with their regional rankings.

Their will be nothing gained by a top MN HS team playing an out of state team that nobody ever heard of.

Go to a prep school or watch a AAA tournament like Mac's if you want to see the top players in those leagues.

It's been something I've been running through my head the past few days and wanted to know if it was even remotely feasible in the first place, which doesn't seem to be the case. I've looked at the national high school rankings this site does and there were six Michigan teams ranked in the top 40 (among a lot of Minnesota schools), so maybe the suggested Michigan vs. Minnesota event would be a better and more competitive choice.

Also, sorry if I offended anybody's anti-basketball sensibilities. I hate basketball but thought it wouldn't be all that harmful to provide a local reference so everyone would clearly understand what I was talking about.

I don't agree with that particular ranking of Edina either (last season's ranking by the way), but one ranking you disagree with completely invalidates the whole list?
