Are There Any HS Coaches Capable of Taking Over the Gophers?

Well, the Don is having another bad year behind the gophers bench. Either he is recruiting the wrong players, or can't get the ones he has to play effectively.

So, I think the time has come to look for a new coach. The question is, who would be candidates to take over the position? Are there any HS coaches capable of taking on this role?

Lets hear your suggestions, and why.

If he is replaced, I think it will be by Dean Blais (Head coach at U Nebraska-Omaha). My guess is if Lucia can't bring the Gophers to the NCAA tourney this year they will look into the possibility of a new coach.

Tom Ward from Shattuck. Why: A true Field General (powerful presence with a touch of fear); respected internationally (not just MN); Gopher Alum; former Gopher assistant coach; great teacher of the game, who flat out gets his players to compete for EVERY PUCK!

Just ask anyone who has played for Ward, vitrually all of them will tell you he is the best coach they've ever played for. And that includes a growing list presently in juniors, college hockey, and the NHL.

You may not like Shattuck, but you've got to respect them. Andy Murray was the prep coach there before Tom Ward, and I'd say he's proven himself to be able to move up just fine.

I think the gophers are recruiting the right players, however, I think they are recruiting players at to young of an age and not giving them time to develop. I also think that the gophers should make their players play more juniors rather then coming straight out of high school!

The issue of what is the cause of this proud program's troubles could cut many different paths. That's not the question posed by the poster...rather he asks if a new coach is assumed needed, whom from MN hs level should it be, and why? In itself, and intriquing question.

While I agree with you, it's a product of the circumstances. They have to bring these kids in early if they want them. There are other options out there for high quality prospects to develop. There is proof in the pudding that bringing in older players work, look at Bemidji state...most of their freshman are 20.

All in all its a double edge sword, bring them in early or not at all. Its the same mentality that has parents rushing Bantam eligible kids to HS. Get them in early so they are ready to leave early so they can sign early. Too much rushing, let development take its course. Sorry to rant...my $.02

I thin the coach should be from the collegiate ranks...In HS you can be good by having a large metro population to choose from. Recruiting is a different story.

A private HS coach should be just fine then.

:) It should be pointed out that Andy Murray was an NHL assistant for many years and coach of the Canadian Olympic team in Nagano before taking the Shattuck job for a year (or two?) ... his son Brady had just enrolled at SSM at the time. He then took the LA Kings head coaching position.

The Hill Murray coach has done well with recruiting over the years.

Jeff Palmer from St. Francis High School. Hands down. Joey Benik is a stud, lets get him in some gold and maroon! Woohoo!

Well, let's see. If you look at the Forum header, it reads "College Hockey Forum". Therefore, it seems to me that a topic related to the Gophers, a college hockey team (even if they don't play much like it so far this season) is appropriate for this forum. Just a wild guess.

Seems to me, the header at the top of page 1 of the "Topics" list, where this topic is listed, says "Minnesota High School Hockey", but since this seems to be just a guessing game, who knows ?

275 posts, one would think you would be able to figure it out.

Several forums from girls to youth to juniors to high school to college.
This is the college forum. As it states, and as it states on the 'click' you hit to get to this forum.

Ignore Spud. Moorhead people have a hard time understanding anything about hockey that Dave hasn't explained to them.

Now back to the original post. At first I thought what a stupid topic. The Gophers would never hire a high school coach to take over for the Don. Now when I've had some time to think about it what high school coach couldn't do a better job with that talent? 20 NHL draft picks and they look horrible. He might be the anticoach.

I will have a hard time taking anything you have to say seriously after this post.

I NEVER "clicked" anything that said anything about college - do you work really hard at being a PUTZ, or does it come naturally ?

It started with that and it just went down hill with whatever Oshie point was trying to be made.
