Under the new cap and trade policy just passed by the House of Representives it would be likely that costs of operations at the local ice arena will increase approximatly 30 % or more due to increase electrical costs and other taxes on operational supplies. Who will have to pay it , the only way is to pass this expense on to families and players, who rent the ice

Well to me it sounds like we need to add the expense of another referee to youth games.

Won't be long and there will be a lot of kids playing basketball!

Good Point! Probably not the CHANGE that everyone was promised.

Of course, I think that MN Hockey has the vision to see this coming. By cutting the State Tournament banquet, AND then charging each team $400 to participate in the state tournament, I must assume that their financial planner must be Bernie Madoff.

Did Minnesota Hockey pass such a ruling last weekend?

That is what I am told, I cannot confirm as I have not seen the minutes from the meeting yet. It sounds as though the concept of no regions never got out of committee, and the numbers from the tournaments still looked bad, so the decision was made to eliminate the banquets and charge the teams for attending.

Personally, I find that a little disturbing with the budget that MN Hockey has.

Maybe some of teh money be taken out of the profits of the Boy's hockey tourney instead of subsidizing the girls tourney?

Most of Mn electrical power comes from coal and that will be hit hardest with the new tax from cap and tax, I dont think the power companies are just going to absord it, No it WILL be passed on to the consumers
also many ice arenas cool the ice with some type of refrigerant, guess what , more tax increases coming on them

well i guess we can always go outside, but i forgot , global warming will assure us that wont happen

and yes it sounds like with over $800,000 in the coffers Mn Hockey will charge $400.00 per team to play in the state tourney,, getting absurded

I should have been more specific; I was wondering where you got the 30% figure from.

At any rate, if MN Hockey is sitting on $800,000 dollars, perhaps we should be directing our rants about rising costs at them, and not the federal government--which probably cares very little about the health of youth hockey. (They've got bigger fish to fry.)

I guess I'm not too concerned about this bill putting Minnesota hockey "in jeopardy." MH isn't going to sit by and watch the sport collapse under rising energy costs if it's got that much money in the bank. After all, they depend on the teams that use these arenas for their revenue.
