Why not? A team cannot win consistently without those guys.

Here's a short list of those in the best position to win Mr Hockey - not necessarily the best players. The criteria:

1) Perceived as clearly the team's Most Valuable Player. This makes it tough on teammates like Stern and Aus that share the limelight playing the same position on the same team

2) Put up big numbers. This makes it difficult for defensive defensemen.

3) Play on a winning team with a decent competitive schedule. This makes it tougher on guys like Benik.

4) Future Potential. Favors those signed up for D1 and those with physical prowess.

Defensemen:

Nate Schmidt

Forwards:

Brock Nelson
Max Gardiner
Brett Patterson
Nick Bjugstad (if he will in fact be a senior)
Adam Knochenmus

hesketh is the one from minnetonka that was drafted correct? i have a hard time believing any highschool kid drafted would stay and play in highschool...wouldnt the team that drafted him urge him to play tougher comp. at a higher level? wouldnt the player want to play at a higher level to expedite is arrival to the nhl? last i heard schmidt was playing juniors, but maybe he changed his mind with blais leaving fargo.

If it comes down to putting up big numbers...
1) Brock Nelson- Improves from Junior year, weak schedule
2) Brett Patterson- Middle of the range schedule, Top 10 Team
3 Max Gardiner- Tough Schedule, Future Gopher
4) Adam Knochenmus - Weak Schedule, Rock Solid Player

....If Bjugstad acclerates, then add him to the list

Don't quote me cause St. Cloud isn't my realm, but is Schmidt even playing high school hockey next year? I feel like I heard he wasn't returning to Cathedral next year.

Also I wouldn't be surprised if Hesketh made the jump to juniors too. If you're going to be a shutdown defenseman you need to practice against better players. It's hard to measure NHL potential against 5' 9" forwards who eat cheez-its for lunch. Get him out there against the 6'+ guys who lower a shoulder and earn their keep. Not saying MSHSL is an inadequate league for preparing players, but in this specific case I might have to say he needs a higher level to prove his ability.

Yeah i thought schmidt was going to be in fargo but not sure.

Im skeptical that a class A player will win the award anytime soon. That knocks out Brock Nelson sadly.

Well he does have a point Gino Guyer was the last single A player to win it...Hanowski broke the point record last year and still didnt win it. Youre going to have to be prettty darn good if you can win it as a single A player, and I doubt Brock Nelson will win it

Guyer played for Greenway which was a AA school the year he won the award. Johnny Pohl was the last winner from a Class A school, Red Wing in '98.
