Do you think Leddy was a good first round pick by the Wild?

It was a surprisng pick. The way the NHL Draft is set up, it seems they are most all just prospects. There are more accomplished players out there, but may not have as much upside as Leddy, at least that's what the Wild must feel. Wish him and the Wild the best!

The NHL draft is about projecting players down the road. Too many people get caught up in what a guy has done to this point.
Leddy may have gone a little earlier than what was expected but he was still expected to be chosen in the 1st round. So it's not exactly a major reach by the Wild.

Nice to see the public school kids in MN (Leddy and Budish) go ahead of the Shattuck kids etc.
Nice statement of the quality of assoc and HS hockey in MN.

Speaking of AAA, does anyone know if Leddy & Budish played association or AAA as youths? Just curious...

I think it has more to do with talent, exposure and environment.

Leddy not only said no to Ann Arbor, he also said no to the ushl. I think this speaks volumes for Minn high school hockey.

There are a lot of opportunities for the Minnesota kids that want to stay in their high school and play with their friends.

budish's stock probably fell because of his coaching or lack of it.

Yeah, Giles sure is terrible at coaching kids who are out for the entire season with injuries.

I hope you weren't serious with that remark.

Knockneed,
Did you get cut from the Edina HS team? Than did you get cut from the Edina Jr. Gold team? Is that why you are cleaning bathrooms at the local McDonald's for a living.
I noticed in a previous post you mentioned Lee would not get drafted cause he is to soft. Did Lee get drafted?

I hated how the commentators at the drafts freaked out because this kid is from Minnesota. I believe our new GM picked him because he is the best pick and for no other reason. We have a solid fan base and we don't need hometown kids to make us fans. It is still pretty cool that it worked out a Minnesota kid was the best pick at the time. Hopefully Leddy will show what kind of hockey players Minnesota can produce.

i feel i should add not that i think leddy was a bad choice but passing on schoerder seems like more of the same old school canadien hockey coming from the wild. in the new era of the nhl i think size is a much smaller factor given schoerders speed and rare even by nhl standerds vision. the wild needs offense and he would have been the better pick.

Dumb Question: What is the advantage of making yourself eligible for the draft if you know you are going to play college anyway? In Baseball and Hockey this happens all the time. In football and basketball players aren't drafted until they're pro ready. I've never understood the what the difference was.

The difference is that in hockey a team drafts the rights to a certain player. Very similar in basketball. A hockey player can still play college, junior's, or internationally before officially signing. A basketball player can obviously play internationally like Rubio, which the Timberwolves drafted. They still have the rights to that player. Baseball is similar to hockey that you can get drafted at a certain age, but if you don't sign than I believe you go back into the draft the following season. Meaning that the Twins may draft X amount players but not sign all of them. The ones they dont sign can continue playing college, or whatever and than the following year they are drafted again. Might be wrong about this, but I think it is close.
As far as Schroeder...21 other teams passed him up too. Keep in mind he was considered a top 10 pick. There was numerous North American skaters taken higher than him that werent projected to go that high. So other teams felt the same as the Wild. I think it is a perfect fit for Schroeder to go someplace else. Through every level of hockey he has left a place to go play somewhere else. It is just fitting for him to leave and go play someplace else.
Leddy is a top notch kid. He will be in the NHL after his two years at the U of M, maybe a third. I expect him to make an immediate jump to the NHL at that time. Look at how many Minnesotan defenseman the Wild have missed; Jordan Leopold, Keith Ballard, Paul Martin, Alex Goligoski.

In hockey you don't make yourself "Draft Eligable", your parents do in the backseat of the old chevy...

Your answer makes sense except for this part. Are you saying that Leddy actually needs to sign with the Wild otherwise he can be drafted again next year? Wouldn't signing then make him a professional and therefore unelligible to play at the U?
In baseball most players drafted play in the minors for a while so even though they may not play for their major league team they are still signed to a professional contract and getting paid to play.
Thanks for the response.

In hockey, you don't declare for the draft. It is based on your birthdate. It isn't up to the player which year he gets drafted.
A player like Leddy does not get inserted back into the draft if he has already been drafted once. The team owns your rights to a certain date and the player becomes a free agent if he is still unsigned after that date.
To keep the explanation simple, all you need to know is the Wild will own Leddy's rights until August of 2014 (which would be the August after his class graduates from the U). If he isn't signed before that, he becomes a free agent and can sign with whoever he pleases.

This is right, yes. The Yankees, for example, did not sign their #1 pick last year because he decided to go to college, and thereby effectively lost their pick. Baseball is also weird because international players are not included in the draft.
Just some food for thought: when it comes to draft strategy, I'm of the opinion that teams should always take the best player available on the board, regardless of need. When teams start convincing themselves that they need a certain type of player, whether that be a power forward or a speedy outfielder or whatever, they begin to overreach and usually don't end up too happy with the results.

Terrible coach, his program produced 4 D 1 players this year. Two of those players were NHL draft choices. The one that was missed may have a chance at playing in the NHL someday.
Two other players heading to Ann Arbor and another that was asked to tryout.
No exposure for he kids, the man sucks!
