How will the 300 mile rule and 3 scrimmage rule effect hockey? Will the early season scrimmagefest like the big one in Duluth, or Cloquet or S. St. Paul need to be canceled? Will Warroad or Roseau still be able to come down to the Cities and play games?

I was under the impression that it was 600 mi and that bordering states are ok!

It was a topic of discussion this weekend at the JR Whitecap games and several parents from Hopkins and Warroad were discussing. You are probably right. I posted because I had not heard of and didn't know what or if there would be any impact.

I believe it's 600 miles round trip and applies to out of state games only.

I think the 600 mile roundtrip limit applies to in state travel too but a waiver can be granted. Below is an excerpt from a Star Tribune Article regarding the change in the high school golf season.

"Among other decisions by the board:

The board approved changes in scrimmaging and travel. No more than two scrimmage dates and one jamboree, or three scrimmage dates, will be allowed. There no longer will be out-of-state travel beyond bordering states and provinces. Roundtrips of more than 600 miles will not be allowed unless approved by the league.
Travel does include team trips over spring break. The ruling goes into effect this fall.

Debate ensued when outgoing board president Mark Kuisle of Rochester suggested fine arts activities should be subject to the same travel criteria. The board will explore that and might rule at its meeting in August.


A recommendation to have home sites used for all but the championship games in section play was approved. The wording of the recommendation allows for flexibility for section quarterfinals and semifinals if a neutral site will better accommodate anticipated attendance or will reduce travel for the participating teams.

Double elimination formats in section playoffs in team sports will change to single elimination for the early rounds. In softball and baseball for example, single elimination will be used until the final four teams are alive when the double elimination format is implemented. Individual sports won't be affected.

The board supported a request by Bloomington Kennedy and Bloomington Jefferson to continue their co-op for wrestling for the next two years. In the postseason, they must split.

The board decided against cutting back on the maximum number of games allowed in an activity.

Mahtomedi activities director Jeff Whisler will be the board president for 2009-10."

What defines a "jamboree", is that what the So St Paul, Duluth, Cloquet pre-season scrimmages are?

I'm not sure but that seems to make sense. I know that some teams do multiple "jamborees" so there could be an issue with doing more than one.

VERY glad to hear this. I remember reading of the suggestion as a way to cut costs in the tough economic times for pretty much all school districts & athletic depts.

I'd hate to ever see it happen.
