I was very excited for this matchup...in a different arena.

Should be an excellent game; I won't make any calls. With the consolation games, it often depends how much each team has mailed it in after the first loss, particularly with teams that have just been upset.

i'm taking edina, coach giles isn't going to have his hornets embarassed again. i predict a big statment from them tomorrow, even though it is a game late haha

Who would have ever predicted one of these teams would be 2 and out. The game everybody wanted to see Friday night and very few will.

I never would have guessed this being the matchup.

Some good hockey at times, lackluster at others. You can tell, at least, these are two talented hockey teams.

unbelievable, never thought DE would be 2 & done, Cooper doesn't even get his last game as a Hound, Has a bad game at end like last year and Randolph blows him off, thought these seniors were a special group to him, Glad to see Tardy have a great game to end his HS career. With all Duluth teams rebuilding who do we look to next year?

East isn't rebuilding next year... Forbort (hopefully) Paulseth, Mellin, Welinski, Meyer, Schendel, and Lutzka return from East's 3 lines. There's not much to say except we lost. I feel for Cooper because Rand doesn't even care. Benched Olson after the first also.

Everson had a hat trick. Also Lee, Taft and Van Voorhis.

Some thoughts on this game, and closing thoughts on both teams, since these are the two I've seen the most of this year.

It was nice to see a nicely-sized crowd on hand for this one. Though the result was disappointing, it was great to see Tardy go out on top with a hat trick. I was not overly surprised that Randolph started Jeanetta; it's a sign that he's looking ahead to next year and trying to get his younger players experience. It may seem a bit harsh to be sitting down seniors at this point, but I won't issue a judgment on that call here.

After the very close game that East and Edina played last year won by Edina, I remember saying that the difference between the two teams was Marshall Everson, and he was again yesterday. Even though overall chances were more or less even, East simply has not had an Everson-like finisher these past two years, and that missing link has likely been the difference between the way the season ended and a medal to close out the year.

Neither goalie was particularly sharp, but that was understandable in Jeanetta's case, as he was making his 4th appearance and 2nd varsity start against arguably the state's most potent offense. A large number of the goals in this game came on power plays for both sides. I also felt it was the worst officiated game of the eight I have seen over the past two days(!), and it was getting pretty chippy by the end with several one-on-one fights, though nothing larger than that. I thought Edina's defense (Baker aside) was what failed them most in the Moorhead game, and it seemed better yesterday. I think their defense might have played a bigger role in the unexpected result this season than the lack of depth at forward.

This season has to be a tough one to swallow for Edina, with all the expectations that have been heaped on this senior class over the past three years. They've been the standard to which everyone has judged themselves over this time period, and that's quite a burden to throw upon a group of high schoolers. I am not an Edina fan, but I have a ton of respect for this hockey program and this group of seniors. I find it very admirable that they stuck together throughout their high school careers and always carried themselves with class. They may never have gotten the result they wanted, but they should never be viewed as failures; they set the standard for Minnesota hockey for 3 years and all managed to earn their D-1 scholarships without leaving their school or community. That is commendable, and I wish them all the best of luck, whether they're off to Minnesota, Harvard, Notre Dame, Holy Cross, or Juniors. They've been a pleasure to watch.

For East, it was a bittersweet year. They finally broke through and got back to State, which is a great achievement; seeing the Hounds introduced at the X was a great thing to see. But once again, I've been left thinking that the whole did not quite end up equaling the sum of the parts. As an East fan I was looking for some closure from the past few years, but didn't quite find it. Any sort of trophy probably would have done it, but the 2-and-out just left the season feeling incomplete. It's harder to swallow knowing that this was the best East team, talent-wise, in quite some time; I wonder if they might be considered the best team ever to go 2-and-out.

So we start looking to next year. The most pressing question is whether Forbort stays or goes; that's his call to make, and I'll respect it either way. Even if he doesn't go they have some large holes to fill on defense. They need a goalie, though the transition process appears to have already started. At forward they return a decent number of bodies, some with potential, but without Tardy they're going to need to come up with a source of goals, or else it will simply be more of the same "so many shots, so few goals" that we've gotten used to. The bantam team is ranked at or near the top of the state, and JV had a strong year, so there will be plenty of bodies to throw at the holes. They likely won't open the year as a favorite, particularly if Forbort goes, but they should be there in the end all the same.

Two questions for you.
1) Do you think East will be as good next year as this year's team?
2) Will the Hounds make it back to State?

I know you probably don't want to commit to this answers now, but it would be nice to here your opinion...
