It seems that there are alot of concerns posted in regard to transfers, the rule itself and how it is interpeted. I have a question to start things off. If a student transfers after beginning 9th grade how long do they have to sit out? I remember last year Cretins goalie sat out the first half of the season playing JV then played Varisty. Also, is the only way to avoid sitting out to actually physically move into the said school district?

Someone will have to remind me but I thought the CDH issue was that she came from out-of-state mid year the year prior...

If you transfer after starting 9th grade it's 1 season for each sport now I think? Or, you can play at the school you came from for that 1 season in each sport... There was a boys player that did this over the past year or so I think...

Correct a transfer is one year. If a family physically moves there is no waiting period.

Lea Jondahl the CDH goalie enrolled and attended CDH in the second semester of her junior year and and was eligible second semester of her senior year after sitting out "one" year. You are eligible to practice and play JV at your new school.

There are many expcetions to the rule. Each circumstance is considered by MSHSL.
I know of 2 players that transfered to school for academic reasons and both were allowed to play their sports. No sitting out.
I know this has happened in private schools more than public.
If you have a legitamate reason they cannot deny you your atheltic eligibilty.
Also, physically moving is a requirement but buying a 2nd home and receiving mail there or having one parent move there has been done in the past also. hmmmm Warroad?

It's a year - not season - as Joe says... And there are ways to petition the MSHSL for "special circumstances" and get immediate eligibility if truly warranted.

It's funny... there are a LOT of transfers and lots of ways around the "rules" so in the end I'm sure anyone can go anywhere they want at anytime without any penalty. Recruitment happens every day but it sometimes amazes me the extremes that some go to to do so (recruit, transfer, etc.).

ghs, can you elaborate on how recruitment happens every day? It seems that the new rule, although not iron clad, has slowed the movement of student athletes among schools.

Not probably really slowed so much.
they have just started their shopping for the 7th and 8th graders.

It is just now when they offer a anonymous scholarship to play it will cost the schools more money because they will have to pay out for more years.

The rules have slowed things a bit, but as said above it's just starting earlier. I won't say anything more than that.
