What is with the cost of ice? Don't our (everyone in the city) taxes pay to build the rinks? Don't fundraisers pay for additional sheets of ice at current facility? It just seems that ice time cost go up every year? Some tax money (ala parks, playgrounds, bike paths, baseball fields) must go to the rinks too. Lets say (like in my community) a 3rd sheet of ice was added to current facility in last 4 years. This sheet was built in conjunction with a private school and fundraising (and tax $$?). So after all that, we still are charged full $160/hour for ice? Maybe I just have no clue, but seems like a double whammy to me.

Point well taken, a percentage should be..but the scope of the expense is much greater supporting a hockey rink then a compared to a baseball field. Also a ball field or park can be used by many more citizens than a indoor hockey rink. The city does supply outdoor hockey rinks. A better comparison maybe to the basketball courts, that the youth association uses at city buildings, and not schools.

The cost of ice pays for the maintenance of the facility. The power bills are huge, the staff needs to be paid, and there is a lot of down time if you really think about it. The ice needs to be maintained 24 hours a day, even though you may only get 6 hours of use during the weekday, and 15 hours during the weekend. Ice costs in other areas of the country are usually quite a bit more since they have to pay their construction costs as well as maintenance.
