Throw out Sections because they restrict the imagination too much. Let's say that you could personally pick 8 teams to go to the big dance in March, which teams would it be?

Edina
Eden Prairie
Jefferson
Duluth East
Centennial
Holy Angels
Minnetonka
Blaine or Maple Grove (depending on who wins Thursday)

It's is a shame that 7 of these are in 3 sections. In some respect this makes the section finals more important games than certainly the first round and possibly the second round of the state tourney... IMHO

Heh heh...I think by using the Edit button, you can change the topic title. If not, let me know and I'll take care of it.

What a nice guy. How about I just want anyone but Edina to win. Go Roseau!

Fun topic. The no section rules gives me the freedom to do this:

Duluth East
Cloquet
Grand Rapids
Roseau
Moorhead
Apple Valley
Edina (I want East to get a shot at them--matching their 1st line vs. East's D should be fun)
White Bear Lake (hey, someone has to lose in the first round...)

First round:
Edina vs. Duluth East (Hounds win, of course)
Apple Valley vs. WBL (foregone conclusion)
Cloquet vs. Rapids (Cloquet)
Moorhead vs. Roseau (Roseau)
Semis:
Duluth East vs. Apple Valley (East wins in 6 OTs)
Cloquet vs. Roseau (Cloquet)
Finals:
Duluth East vs. Cloquet (East).
Roseau finishes 3rd; Rapids brings home the consolation trophy.
:D

In no particular order...
Edina
Eden Prairie
Duluth East
Minnetonka
Jefferson (as much as I don't like them, they're still top 8 )
Centennial
Holy Angels
Benilde

It really is a shame that 6 of these teams are packed into 2 sections, while any of these teams could cruise through section 1AA without their first line. Something needs to be done about sections to fix this.

It really is a shame as these team deserve to play in the MINNESOTA BIG SHOW!
Maybe, the MSHSL could do the right thing and seed 6 teams and have the next top 4 play for the 2 last spots.
Time for a change??? Something that would be great to watch for all three days.

I agree with others that it would be nice to balance out the sections more by having the stronger teams split up. However, one of the best things about the current state tourney set up is the 'do or die' format of section games. I wouldn't want to eliminate the section playoffs like you are suggesting. It's creates a lot of drama when a team can be perfect all season long and have one bad game and be out. Likewise, a team that hasn't played great might have a little puck luck and get to the state tourney. That is what makes it such a unique time of year.

Hopefully they will find a practical way to balance the sections more so you don't have several top teams forced to knock each other out but I wouldn't want to go to a format of only 10 teams having a shot at state based on seeding.
