who do you have as the top goalies in the state?
Two that come to mind for me are Matt Cooper of Duluth East and Jacob Meyers of BSM. Any others?

Cooper can be great one game and shakey the next. In my opinion, most of the credit should go to the defense.
The breck goalie is very talented and has played exceptional at times.
What about Central's goalie?

O'Connor from Jefferson and Burke from AHA are some to include. Edina's goalie is pretty good too.

I keep hearing good things about the tender from St. Francis Andy Benik. I haven't seen him play but I know he leads the state in saves (410) and does not have much of a defense playing in front of him.

Just ran through some numbers on Pointstreak obviously it doesnt tell the whole story but it tells a little bit. I only used goalies that played in 5 or more games so far this season so some are left out.

Matt Cooper- Duluth East- Ranks 1st in both
Casey Connor- Jefferson- Ranks top 10 in both
Trey Flesch- Northern Lakes- Ranks top 10 in both
Sean Elmer- Maple Grove- Ranks top 5 in both
Zane Gothberg- Thief River Falls- Ranks top 10 in both
Matt Hemingway- Alexandria- Ranks top 10 in both
Mike Ness- Woodbury- Ranks top 15 in both
Jacob Meyers- BSM- Ranks top 15 in both
Micheal Sperl- Little Falls- Ranks top 20 in both
Aaron Gretz- Apple Valley- Ranks top 20 in both
Ryan O'Shea- Eastview- Ranks top 25 in both

meyers looked great in the schwan cup championship on FSN.. great movement and very big in the net, what the scouts look for. I can't say i've ever seen cooper from Duluth play yet.

Rating goalies based on purely stats from pointstreak doesn't really paint a clear picture. All of the goalies listed play on top end teams. GAA is going to be low, Save percentage also. Are these goalies seeing the same amount of goal scoring chances as lower or mid level teams.

I think the Moberg kid from Forest Lake is the real deal. Plays on a weaker team, but gives his team a chance night in, night out.

Even if one could trust the info on Pointstreak, what you said is true.

Like I said it doesn't tell the whole story but it gives you some goalies to maybe look at. It's a start. I wouldn't agree with the statement of playing on a good team means your save % is going to be good though.

It is really hard to evaluate goalies based on stats, but if a goalie looks great, but doesn't get the job done in games, thats another issue. There was criticism of Mike Lee about how his stats were purely from being on Roseau and now he almost made the WJC team and after seeing how McCollum played, probably should lhave. Point, it is really hard to tell and Lee was criticized about this but has so far proven himself, while others were highly lauded and haven't turned out very good.

You could also pop Fons from Hopkins in the conversation.

I would put in Gleinser from Hastings and Wilcox from S. St. Paul also in that group that gives their team a chance to win no matter what. The point about having good stats because you are on a good team is somewhat moot though because those goalies may excel on average team also.

Cooper and O'Connor have solid numbers so far, but each are playing with some of the top defensemen in front of them. O'Shea from Eastview is a good goalie playing on an average team. He has had 30 plus saves in 7 out of his 11 games. He lacks size but is still one of the top goalies.

What about Altrichter from St. Thomas? I had heard the Gophers were looking at him and Meyers.

From watching a couple of his games, i'm astonished if the gophs are seriously looking. He is very athletic, but i have never seen another goalie get out of position like he does. he can get away from it in hs but im not so sure at another level. Again, this may have only been the couple games i saw.

Northern Lakes has a very sound fundamental and quick goaltender.
Near the top this year. Last year recored record number of wins for the
program. Very sound. Trey Flesch. Plays a lot of AAA in summer and fall and is very experienced.
Also Reid Mimmack from Brainerd should be counted in that mix as well.
Quite a number of decent tenders this year.

No hshckfan08, you are absolutely right. I dont understand how altrichter makes some of the saves he makes. Everybody thinks wow he is amazing when he makes those acrobatic saves but the only reason he has to do it is from being out of position. I would be amazed if the gophs were looking at this kid. Meyers though, thats another topic, I've been impressed with him of what I have seen of him.

I agree with Sykes. Jon Gleinser from Hastings is an excellent goalie. Gives Hastings a chance to win every game. Sees on average at least 35 to 40 shots a game and still keeps them in the game.

Classic Lake also has some great goalies: Kruger from Tonka, Fons from Hopkins, Simcoe from Wayzata and Ankeny from Edina all give their team a chance to win.

I agree. that is the kind of kid you look for. Like Jack Horner from North St. Paul many years ago. No one thought of him but he only made all american 3 times (might have been 4)at Bemidji and should have played D1. We won't know who really is the best until like Scoring, we measure in more detail. How about shots and save percentage rom the "red zone"? Quality shots from dot to dot post to post. How about rebounds left in the corner vs out front. There is so much more to measure for goalies, we haven't even scratched the surface. I doubt Benilde with their weaker half schedule gives up more than 5 red zone shots a week. Whereas when they play the tougher teams they may give up 15 maybe 20. Hard to judge a goalie on simple averages is all I'm saying. Until we keep better stats we'll only know who the real best is after they make a run at juniors and college where those type of stats are kept and tracked.

I just left the tonka Eastview game. If there is a better goalie than the Eastview kid I'd like to see him. 53 saves, at least 35 from the red zone all goals unstoppable. I was very impressed. Kind of little, reminded me of Goering.

Seems like the gophs like to go hit, miss, hit, miss in general.

Larsen from Centennial has really stepped up lately and is performing as well as any sophomore goalie ive ever seen. He has really progressed a lot this season.

Zane Gothberg for Thief River Falls is doing very well. He also has good defense in front of him. Thoughts??
