There was a report today in the Pioneer Press that Dorr is leaving the team due to lack of playing time.

Dorr had committed to UMD while still in high school, but backed out on that committment to join the Gophers. Could be kind of hard for any team to take his "committment" seriously... But I do hope the best for Michael as he is a good kid.

There is a lesson here.. Just because you want to be a Gopher (or a Husky, or Badger... etc. ) doesn't mean that it's the right thing for you to do. As a player you need to try to go to a school that has a need for you and that you will play at if possible. If a kid is going to a college and getting a 50% ride or so, then you probably won't be in the line-up most nights. I don't know what Michael was getting for a scholarship, but I doubt that the U of MN gives many full-rides since they really don't need to.

Most players think they are going to get playing time where they go. I doubt many of them decide on a school and think, "Yeah, I won't play much". Obviously Dorr was expecting to see more ice time than he did.

Even if a player doesn't get immediate ice time at the school of his choice, the opportunity will likely present itself in time. Dorr is the kind of player that is likely to be a four year player since he isn't a top pro prospect. His time would have come if he had maintained a level of patience rather than jump ship after only 1/2 of a season.

Obviously depth charts change from year to year and the odds are much better that your ice time increases as you become a veteran. It seems like Dorr wanted some immediate gratification.

I agree... to a point. However, in most cases on teams like the Gophers the incoming recruits can be an indication of what's to come. Along those lines, he may have had some discussions with the coaching staff and realized that the future wasn't as bright as he had hoped. We may never know in that regards.

Regardless, I hope the best for the kid.

Dorr is enrolled at and practicing with MSU-Mankato.
Hopefully this will work out better for him as he is a very skilled player.
