The IRC: Virginia at Eveleth

Just posting a video interview and some photos from the Virginia pasting of Eveleth, 9-0. Looks like the Blue Devils are going to make some noise in the IRC this winter, especially after beating Rapids earlier this season.

Hockey is a dying sport in Eveleth. It used to be alot of fun watching these two teams battle into overtime. Keith Hendrickson is doing a good job keeping hockey alive in Virginia. He's one of the last few old school coaches left on the the Iron Range.
I feel sorry for the goaltenders in Eveleth. I read one of them had 30 shots on him in the first period against I-Falls. Where is the defense? They obviously don't clean up in front of the net. I think what should happen to Eveleth's program in the future is to go Independent and stay out of the IRC because they simply can't compete.

What's sad is that hockey is a dying sport in Eveleth. Like 10 said, that use to be a HUGE match up; Virginia vs. Eveleth..packed arena, excitment, etc. It's too bad; not sure why hockey is dying in Eveleth. Too many head coaching changes? Too many kids leaving? (if they are leaving)? What is it?
I remember when Silver Bay went to the state tournament; for a town that size the hockey team RULED the town....I think it was the same for Eveleth but it's been a little while. Everyone wanted to watch, talk, eat, breath hockey.
Again it's too bad. What can be done to restore that pride, that tradition to get it back to where it was?

Rocketwrister-
I think you named a number of reasons why this program is on a drastic decline. Since 2005 Eveleth has had 3 different head coaches. One coach sticks around and teaches his ways of the sport and then he's gone and someone else comes in and teaches something completely different. How are kids that are on their 3rd varsity coach supposed to transition thru all this.
Also, kids leaving this program has been a big issue in recent years. Without naming names, i can think of 5 kids that have left the program since 05. Those kids that have graduated never made it anywhere, and the other ones are serving their mandatory 1 year suspension.
Simply the biggest problem in Eveleth now is that the kids playing HS hockey dont realize what they a part of as far as history goes. I think they just take it for granted now. Numbers are down so they dont have to worry bout getting cut. Then some will develop the "I'm good, so i should get special treatment" attitude. It is truly sickening to see. It should be an honor to play for Eveleth-Gilbert. Most kids would give anything to play at the Hippodrome. These kids get to play 15-20 games there a year. Do they realize how lucky they are?
That attendance at the Virginia game was unbelievable, 10 years ago that would have been close to double. And it was like a funeral in there. so quiet.
If Eveleth has hopes for anything they need to start playing with a chip on their shoulder. It seems like there are maybe 2 or 3 kids that play with emotion out there. They dont crash the net anymore, get more physical, and please SHOOT the puck more. Enough of this dangling crap. Your not gonna win a game with 7 shots on net.
I truly hope the Bears can turn it around and bring back the tradition and pride of Eveleth-Gilbert hockey. It would be a shame to lose such a historical program

I went over to this game, and the attendance was the lowest I've ever seen it for a Virginia/Eveleth game - and I've been going to these since the late 70's. No band, no atmosphere, zero enthusiasm from the Eveleth side. I actually think there were more Virginia fans in arena. I hope I am wrong here, but I think this might have been the funeral for this rivalry.
In order to have a rivalry, there needs to be some competetive games and both teams need to win. Eveleth hasn't beaten Virginia in years, and haven't even been competetive. Here is the last ten meetings:
Virginia 9, @Eveleth 0
@Virginia 9, Eveleth 1
Virginia 10, @Eveleth 1
@Virginia 6, Eveleth 2 (playoff)
@Virginia 8, Eveleth 4
Virginia 9, @Eveleth 2
@Virginia 7, Eveleth 2 (playoff)
@Virginia 7, Eveleth 3
Virginia 7, @Eveleth 0
@Virginia 11, Eveleth 1
And there is little sign of any change in the youth programs.
If you ask Virginia fans who their biggest rivals are, you will hear Hibbing, Duluth Marshall, Hermantown, Grand Rapids, or maybe International Falls, but you will no longer hear Eveleth.

all I can say is that the heart of hockey is losing its blood line in youth hockey, and all that are involved should be aware that if something doesn't happen with in the next few years that the whole program will be gone. the parents of the players need to sit there kids down and talk to them about the dedication and passion that hockey has and is to be in Eveleth.

Rocketwrister, are you a Silver Bay guy?
I grew up in Mariners' country and lived there until I was 14...played youth hockey all the way up through Bantams...had Mike Guzzo as my Pee Wee coach back in the day.

Well, you know what they say. A 9 goal lead is the hardest ones to keep.
But seriously. Even at their own 'Home of Hockey' Holiday Tournament there wasn't a large amount of attendance. It was dismal. The Eveleth team was almost as bad. But I must say, they did take care of business against Kitson, even if KC is an ok team they were mopped by Eveleth.
Sometimes you just have to hope that enough hopes and miracles will happen for hockey to return to the old country. I know that it would make more than a couple people happy.

The main reason Eveleth isn't competing is a losing attitude, alot of the kids have it in their head that they'll never be as good as past teams. In the 2010-2011 season they should have one of the best teams they ever had. They'll have almost a whole team of seniors, alot of who have been key players on the team as sophmores. They'll also have three senior goalies on the team who have also been the top three goalies on the team since they were sophmores. I could see them going to state.

Hey Kid! Sorry to burst your bubble and the little fantasy world your living but Eveleth will never, ever, ever, ever, never, ever make it to a state tourney again. Numbers are declining and they just can't compete with Hibbing,Virginia,Marshall and Falls. Heck they have trouble competing with Ely and Two Harbors. They'll be lucky to have the 8 seed next year.

I see Eveleth suffered a humiliating loss to I-Falls 16-0. they should do what Greenway did and pull out of the IRC.
I thought we were bad when I played, losing to #1 Grand Rapids 5-2 in the early 80s.
Eveleth has 11 returning players this year, mostly juniors. There could be some light at the end of the tunnel, their Bantam A team beat Hibbing last week 5-4.
At least the people in Eveleth and Gilbert could watch the Girls go to State this year and be competetive

Hibbing's Bantam A's have not played Eveleth this year. So I don't know where you got that statistic. I know this isn't a bantam forum but I thought I'd clear that up. Unless you know for sure don't give false information.

I found that statistic on the Eveleth Hockey website. It is possible that it was their Bantam BS. I also saw that Eveleth lost to Grand rapids 4-2 and lost to Greenway 5-4. Eveleth's Pee wee AS are doing ok. Maybe the scores were wrong.
But as far as the varsity team, it looks like Virginia would handle them easily, probably about 20-0. shots Virginia 80 Eveleth 2

Ya Eveleth had a great run, but after an embarrassing 16-0 loss against the falls. I think that run is over.
Yes, Eveleth has young players coming up and will mostly likely be better in the future, but for now not so much.
