Doesn't appear to be as many "banner" games this week as last, but still some interesting matchups. The one I'd most like to see: Hill Murray vs. GR/G on Saturday - that should be a real battle! Feel free to post your thoughts and predictions:

Tuesday, December 9
Minnetonka (7AA) 2, Blaine (13AA) 2 OT
Hibbing/Chisholm (12A) 0, Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (15AA) 1

Thursday, December 11
White Bear Lake (11AA) 4, Blaine (13AA) 3
Andover (19AA) 1, Blake (2A) 5
Centennial (12AA) 2, Edina (5AA) 2 OT
Benilde-St. Margaret’s (10AA) 1, Minnetonka (7AA) 2
Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (15AA) 2, Proctor/Hermantown/Duluth Marshall (8AA) 4

Friday, December 12
Crookston (6A) 2, Roseau (1A) 7

Saturday, December 13
Hill Murray (4AA) 3, Grand Rapids/Greeway (6AA) 4 OT
Holy Angels (16AA) 0, Minnetonka (7AA) 5

In these weekly "Big Games" threads I've only been including games involving AA teams that are ranked in LPH's Top 20 and/or A teams that are highly ranked. So far I don't believe LPH has ranked Bemidji.

Hard to believe but Edina only has one "Big Game" this week (although I don't think Farmington is chopped liver) after having 3 last week. I think Edina has the toughest schedule in girls HS hockey. After this week they have Wayzata, Hopkins and Roseville to finish off the month. That's 7 ranked teams in the first 9 games. Its a tough road for a first year coach.

It would be a very tough road for even the most seasoned high school coach. Part of it is the small but difficult Classic Lake Conference, where they must play Wayzata, Minnetonka and Hopkins twice each. But beyond that they then load up the schedule with lots of really hard non-conference games, including this past weekend plus their own Thanksgiving and Holiday tourneys where all the teams they invite in are really good.

You wonder if it's get to the point where they can get worn down, with TOO many pressure-packed and physically exhausting games.

It is a VERY difficult schedule and that is a big part as to why I made the prediction of no more than 10 wins for them. Hopkins has very few games coming up, and it only gets good starting the 16th vs. Minnetonka and then Edina.

Yes, I think the physical exhaustion factor might be a concern. I think I would worry more about the mental factor. As I see it, winning is contagious and so is losing. You see it all the time in sports where a team has great talent but does not win. Right now Edina is .500. I think if they start winning around 75-80% of their games it will morph them into a top 5 team by the end of the year but if they start losing more than they win it could affect their confidence.

Here are my picks.

Tuesday, December 9
Minnetonka (7AA) 2 vs. Blaine (13AA) 1
Hibbing/Chisholm (12A) 0 vs. Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (15AA) 5

Thursday, December 11
White Bear Lake (11AA) 3 vs. Blaine (13AA) 1
Andover (19AA) 1 vs. Blake (2A) 5
Centennial (12AA) 1 vs. Edina (5AA) 4
Benilde-St. Margaret’s (10AA) 1 vs. Minnetonka (7AA) 2
Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (15AA) 2 vs. P/H/Duluth Marshall (8AA) 3

Friday, December 12
Crookston (6A) 1 vs. Roseau (1A) 3

Saturday, December 13
Hill Murray (4AA) 4 vs. Grand Rapids/Greeway (6AA) 2
Holy Angels (16AA) 1 vs. Minnetonka (7AA) 3
Wayzata (18AA) 1 vs. Roseville (2AA) 4

I will be attending the Centennial Edina game. I' will take good notes. Should be good. I think Edina is going to break out of their scoring slump.

Two very tight and low scoring games to start out the week as Minnetonka and Blaine tie 2-2, and Cloquet edges Hibbing 1-0.

Next set of games are Thursday night:

White Bear Lake (11AA) vs. Blaine (13AA)
Andover (19AA) vs. Blake (2A)
Centennial (12AA) vs. Edina (5AA)
Benilde-St. Margaret’s (10AA) vs. Minnetonka (7AA)

Benilde-St. Margaret’s 1 (10AA) vs. Minnetonka (7AA) 3

Again some very close, hard-fought games Thursday night:

White Bear Lake (11AA) 4, Blaine (13AA) 3
Andover (19AA) 1, Blake (2A) 5
Centennial (12AA) 2, Edina (5AA) 2 OT
Benilde-St. Margaret’s (10AA) 1, Minnetonka (7AA) 2
Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (15AA) 2, Proctor/Hermantown/Duluth Marshall (8AA) 4

With the exception of the Edina-Centennial tie, all of the higher ranked teams were victorious. Melvin44 narrowly missed getting all 5 correct by just a single goal, and both OntheEdge and Bensonmum also got 4 right.

Friday, December 12
Crookston (5A) 2, Roseau (3A) 7

Roseau posts a convincing win over rival Crookston. The prognosticator group here thought it would be closer, more like a 2 or 3 goal margin.

Today's featured games:
Hill Murray (4AA) vs. Grand Rapids/Greeway (6AA)
Holy Angels (17AA) vs. Minnetonka (7AA)
Wayzata (18AA) vs. Roseville (2AA)

Saturday, December 13
Hill Murray (4AA) 3, Grand Rapids/Greeway (6AA) 4 OT
Holy Angels (17AA) 5, Minnetonka (7AA) 0
Wayzata (18AA) 1, Roseville (2AA) 3

hockeyrube7 was the only one to pick GR/G's big win (in OT) over Hill Murray (sounds like it was a super game). Roseville and Minnetonka continue to roll - all four of these teams are really good. Again, lots of parity this year in the Top 10.
