Cory Mack from East Grand Forks is a freshman and after hearing some of his bantam numbers and his aggression on the ice he will be someone to watch in the north

Anybody know if Grant Besse will be playing varsity for Blake?

It's tough for a Sophomore to make an impact at the varsity level. It's very rare that a freshman can come along and be a significant contributor.

Frankly, I think the Freshman varsity prospect should be with his buddies in bantams .............. that is if the kid is within bantam eligibility range.

Life is short, many people try to rush things along.

Why hold a kid back? If he has the ability and has the desire to do it, he may as well play. Its not like he is moving 200 miles away to play varsity.

Have to agree with gopher blog. If the player is strong enough to play (take Travis Boyd for example) and make an impact, he would be wasting his time playing Bantams. If the player is going to sit, probably better to play another year of Bantams and be the team leader. You definitely get better by playing better competition and playing WITH better players. If your goal is college hockey or beyond, go for it and play at the highest level you can!! "If he has the ability and the desire to do it, he may as well play" Really well said!

WOW - your absolutely right "doglover" - bantam hockey could be
counter-productive for the freshman that is "varsity-ready"

If they have the strength/ability is the big question. If playing at the varsity level significantly reduces the amount of time a kid has the puck on his stick it can be counter productive as well. Every year there will be a few players that can make the leap but it can be a lost year for those that are not ready. A weak varsity program isn't a good enough reason to make the jump. You can argue the point from either side ... Zack Buddish played bantams..didn't seem to slow his development. Schroeder and Boyd skipped them all together. If you can't DOMINATE in bantams why move up?

I think Bantam hockey can absolutely be counter-productive if you are truly Varsity ready and can make an impact at the higher level. Zach obviously wanted to play with his buddies but they didn't even win the Bantam A tournament that year - the whole reason the group chose to stay together I would guess. How much better could he have been had he skipped that Bantam year (which just had to be a joke for him) and played HS? I also think the Edina Varsity was pretty weak that year if I recall so it may not have had the attraction that the possiblity of winning the Bantam championship did and that may have factored in the decision!

Boyd definitely made an impact on Hopkins and is still only in 9th grade. Schroeder always played at the highest level he could and I bet he's pretty darn happy with the way it worked out. Both those guys are going to be big names (already are!). How many guys who played their last year of Bantams instead of moving up, are ahead because of it? They probably enjoyed playing with the buddies, but did it improve their development more than a year on Varsity- you'd have to show me an example of one. Guess it depends on your end goal.

I think both Boyd and Schroeder are the exception not the norm. By passing on your second bantam year you give up a lot of experience in situations you most likely wont play in at the HS level. I think if you can get a regular shift (top 6 forward or top 4 d) you jump. If not, stay play every situation possible and start your HS career as a sophmore. All in all there are very few players that fall into the counter productive category...

No doubt those are success stories but we don't hear much about the kids who shouldn't have. With respect to these kids I won't use names but I'm aware of quite a list who's development basically stopped. Its just not that simple.

traina will not make that much of a contribution to breck. he's a very good player but they enough depth at forward that a freshman won't play very much.
rudnick is at breck, his size should make it easier for him to adapt to the high school level and he could very well make a contribution

I would add Dillon Stolt of Albert Lea as well as Austin Head of Dodge County very good players. Don't forget Zach Hoffman of New Ulm he is a very talented d-man with good size.

I think all three of these boys are sophomores... but I think they will all be able to contribute to their respective teams.

Stolt has a little buddy down there in AL that could be a freshman that contributes at the varsity level this year.

Grant is only in 8th grade and he goes to Breck. Great young talent but probably a year from Varsity.

The parents at Breck tell me that he will be the top freshman forward and possibly a strong second line player.
