How would or how does your associations handle a situation like this.

The Association will be holding tryouts for our U10 A and B team.

Due to the shortage of girls, all the U8's have been invited to tryout for the U10 B team. Just six U8's decided to tryout for which there's room for all 6 making a tryout unnecessary. Total girls including the six U8's are 28 girls which is enough for a U10 A and a U10 B Team.

So the decision has been made to move up the girls it's just how far to move them up.

Should the tryouts just be opened up and allow U8's on the U10 A team if they made it through the tryout process instead of just the U10 B team?

Our association has a strict policy on move ups (boys or girls). No move ups are permitted unless the girl wanting to move up is doing so so that she can play with her classmates. In other words, her classmates are older and she is in a higher grade. Furthermore, once a move up is permitted the girl that moved up has to stay with her class and cannot change her mind an go back. In other words, a player can play only 2 years at U10, 2 years at U12 and 2 years at U14. We have found that allowing move ups only create problems and isn't in the best interests of the development of players. If a move up is permitted the player is now a first year player at the level and treated like every other player at the level.

If we had a situation such as yours, we would not permit the U8s to move up and we would look for age appropriate players from another association to fill in.

Most your points are more tailored to that superstar asking to move up and we share a similar policy. This isn't our situation though. We need these girls to move up.

I hope my question was clear. We are letting the 6 move up but the original intention was U10 B only. That decision has been made out of necessity. Since we've opened the valve many are now asking why then can't they try out for A.

It's counter to development. I can hear their argument that if they are moving for the assoc.'s convenience, than they should be able to tryout for A. That's why the best suggestion is to go outside of your association and try to find more age appropriate girls. That being said, we have been moving up mites to fill C squirt teams, since our district eliminated competitive mite play. Not many, a handful like you. They are not allowed to tryout. However, grade appropriate kids are allowed to try out but are held to two years at each level. The extra year doesn't count for the move up to C mite kids. They are allowed to play three years at Squirts, so that's their benefit for moving up to fill up those open spots. Your U8's will have the benefit of three years of U10, and can try out for two of those.

Our association does it this way though we should consider Rainbowing in the future like our older girls do.

Since they're moving up out of necessity for the associations benefit they should be allowed to tryout for whatever they want and let the chips fall where they may.

This is a no brainer. This isn't little Johnny parents asking for special treatment.

To much unsaid here, My guess is this, 8U players will work more on skills, 10UB players will work less on skills but still quite a bit. 10 u A will will work on russian breakouts, regrouping, the new Jersey trap. Sorry keep my yougster down and working on skills at 8U and 10U as long as you can as a matter of fact dont put him/her on a travel team at all until they are 12 . But then of course how would they be seen .

Get a good coach and keep all 6 at the B level. They can develop together and hopefully make an impact at the A level for the next couple of years.

I agree. Because the association is asking them to move up, they should be allowed to tryout just like anybody else at that level. If they are good enough and make the 10A team then so be it.

However, you imply (but were not clear) in your initial letter that they asked these girls to move up to fill the 10B team. If that is the case, then they moved up for 10B and should play there.

With girls it is totally different then boys. It is fairly common in smaller associations for 8th and 9th grade girls to be playing at the H.S. level. To do this they rob the U14 team so then the U14 then needs U12 which then needs U10 which then needs U8.
