Assistant Mike Guentzel has resigned from his position as coach of the University of Minnesota men's Hockey team to spend more time with his family. Who should be the next assistant at the U?

Here is an interesting thought... Bill Lechner (Hill-Murray). Just think about it. Or Dave Christian.

I think Eric Rud will be a candidate. Lots of ties to Lucia and he has a quality resume at less prestigious programs.

Not sure if they would leave their current spot but Tom Ward of Shattuck and Kevin Hartzell of Sioux Falls are both good coaches that are former Gophers.

I am sure there won't be any shortage of excellent candidates given the job prestige and the big pay.

Butters... Giles...

I like the Ward or Hartzell mention, yet there is a Iron Ranger available, even though he was from Virginia (not Rapids), it may be Harrington's to lose...

Except for the fact that Hartzell wasn't a defenseman and I would think that Lucia would be looking for a former d-man to be his defensive coach.

Isn't he going overseas to coach professionally?

Yes. He is already gone from what I hear. Or atleast on his way over. He will not be a candidate. If it is going to be a 1980 olympian it will be Dave Christian. His son is looking for a school to walk on to...and he's a goalie.

I believe they will go for the best coach no matter what position the guy used to play in his younger days. It may turn out it ends up being a former defenseman but I don't think they will get locked into it that way.

Agreed. Besides, Lucia was a defenseman in his college days and could focus his attention with his new coaching staff. Then the other 2 coaches could be responsible for the forward play and the power play/penalty kill.

GB - Don't you think Hill's resignation is on the way as well? That's the rumor. Scott Bell would have to be a candidate, wouldn't he?

Hill applied for the USHL job that Gino Gasparini is stepping down from after the USHL season is over. He applied to that job a few months ago from what I understand. So Hill may end up leaving if he got that job (although I hear another hockey coach is the leading candidate). I am not sure if Hill has applied for any other hockey admin jobs beyond that though.

From what I understand, Bell has openly expressed an interest in the past if something opened up. Not sure if he would be the right guy though. I know he has done well turning around Hamline but I would think they would go with a guy that has a known rep beyond just Minnesota. But I don't make the hire either so I'll just listen and watch.

This would be my guess also--Eric Rud.
