Minnesota, with the help of Bernie McBain has run their own version in the past couple of years. It's called the Premier '(whichever year is 14). Was and I suppose still is a good program. There are 80 players from around the state invited and split into 4 teams for a mini tourney. From that group, 40 are chosen to go to Ann Arbor for a 4 day tour, trip and competition with the USA coaching staff. Minnesota is one of 2 states in the union that does not participate in the Advanced 14 program and Mr. McBain used some connections to set this deal up. In my opinion, it was an outstanding opportunity and well worth going. My son played a couple of years ago and it was a great trip. While the players didn't compete against anyone from around the country, the were exposed to what the NTDP program is all about and were seen by some of the National Program's top scouts and evaluators. Great trip for the kids in terms of hockey education. Would recommend this for anyone who gets an invite.rbkhockey4life wrote:i may be wrong but i think there is no such thing as select 14. i have never heard anything about it before
My son did a couple of MM events when he was a pee wee, and I would guess that's how they got his name for this event. There were others out there that I'm sure were scouted. Players like Isaacson, Lutzka, Meyer, Gavin and Herbert did not, to the best of my knowledge have any serious ties to MM. Like I said before, the trip was well worth going as there was some great hockey played both in the tryout process and in Ann Arbor. The boys were treated very well by the NTDP staff and got to tour a great facility. Several of the players have had continuing contact with the NTDP. I spoke with Ryan Reizmerski(sp) the director of player personell while in Edina for the Edina Classic, and he's continued to keep in touch with several of the players from the original Premier teams. I would recommend attending if offered the chance.conditioningsucks wrote:Interesting concept. Found this at MN Made Hockey:

GR3343, how were these players invited, selected? Is it the same bunch of hockey dads that pick the Super Series' teams? Is MN Made deciding who is worthy (if you pay for their hockey programs does that give you an advantage over other players)? Is someone actually scouting AAA kids or associations to invite the 80 players?
It is hard to determine if this is USA Hockey sanctioned or if it is just some kind of 'field trip' put on by Minnesota Made. What is it?
Based on what I can see, this looks like another Super Series selection process. Let us know how things went for you.
Actually, the cost for this was less than playing Super Series or Selects. You've shown you don't care for or agree with any MM ideas. You appear to be another short sighted person with a dislike for original thoughts. Maybe I'm too old school, but I'm of firm belief that opportunities and experiences don't grow on trees. If someone is offering a reasonable chance to experience something otherwise unavailable, or unthought of, then I believe a person should listen. The great Herb Brooks once published an article that stated one of the problems with Minnesota youth hockey players was vision. Too few kids these days set their sights higher than their local high school or in state collegiate teams. MM as well as other programs, are attempting to show these kids that there's more out there in terms of hockey opportunities. Do they make money? Certainly, it's their business. There are no guarantees offered, only opportunities. Personally, I think too often, we sell ourselves and our kids short by not allowing them to believe. Obviously, it's a fine line to walk, but there's nothing wrong with faith, hope and desire. If something stirs you up inside and creates more of a passion, the better odds you'll pursue your dreams. If and when these hopes don't bear the fruit you originally expected, you'll at least have the understanding that you did all you could. As a parent, I would never tell my kids they can't achieve something. Back on topic concerning the 14's, if it allows even 1 kid to be exposed to a great experience and stir those fires inside him, then it's well worth it.mnb327 wrote:Another pay to play deal, no such thing in Minnesota Hockey.
Wake up people ;erson making a living off of hopes and dreams.
Taxi Driver to hockey expert.
14 selects no different than Super Series, Minnesota Selects just more money.

I think he holds tryouts and uses the MM lists as well as he personally contacts the premier kids at the age level ('95) to encourage them to participate. I've heard from parents who had kids go in prior years that it was fun to visit/tour the facility and it was a good experience. I've also heard that he doesn't usually get all the best kids to go so the scouts there haven't been impressed in prior years, with the MN talent. It's sort of a MN Pride trip to MI and it is what it is. You pay to go and have the opportunity to see the facility. If you have interest in that, it's probably not a bad idea if your son makes the team. Absolutely no need to participate though - most of the better players wait until the USA Hockey sanctioned Adv. 15's.
