really? Is he really short or something or why not d1 material? Crandall has a d1 scholarship at the moment and from watching the two play I'd personally say Phillippi was better.

Does UN - Omaha have a goalie opening in the future? Maybe big bro can hook him up...

Flip is a great goalie! Although, just like him, other great goalies from Minnesota seem to have a tough time after high school. With all the goalies coming in from other countries... the competition is unbelievable

I have talked to Joe's dad about the no looks from division 1 and he basically told me that they think he is too small. The other dumb thing was that he has chosen to play baseball in the spring instead of hockey and they are questioning his dedication to hockey. I think that is pretty stupid for them to say that.

Jeff Lerg for Michigan State: 5'6" and is a Hobey Baker finalist.

Size is a factor, but any goalie can play at any level. Flip is good, just not D1 material.

Karl Goehring was about half his size and after a year of juniors, they finally figured out he wasn't half bad. From what I've seen of Joe, he would be an asset to any program.

from my knowledge I hear there were a few scouts at the Hill vs. AHA game. a game that flip didn't play his best in so i'm sure that didn't give them the best impression. but i dont see why they wouldn't have their minds changed after the state tourney.

i heard some comments that he didn't see that though of quality shots but i still think he stood on his head.

These are the only MN native starting D1 goalies that I know of

WCHA

MSUM- Mike Zacharias, Armstrong
UMD- Alex Stalock, So. St. Paul
UofM- Alex Kangas, Roch. Century

Phillipi no where near the caliber of these 3.


Hockey East

Vermont- Joe Falloon, Bemidji

Still not that close.


CCHA

UN-Omaha- Jared Kaufman, Roseville

This is where size comes in. Kaufman was maybe only a slightly better HS goalie than Phillipi, but its easier for a 6'3" kid to get quicker in jrs. than it is for a 5'8" kid to get bigger.


AHA

Mercyhurst- Matt Lundin, Apple Valley

Never saw Lundin in HS, heard he was a stud though.



Bottom line is that even though we produce more D1 studs than anyone else, college coaches still know where to go to get their goalies, CANADA!

Lundin was phenomenal, so was his older brother.

Listen to the experts, who gave Phillippi All-Metro, All-State, Herb Brooks Award, All-Tourney, and many other honors as the top goalie in Minnesota, before listening to the whiners and haters and bored.

Five or 6 of this year's Pioneer seniors will eventually play D-1 if they chose.

I really like this kid a lot and really hope the best for him and you never know what can happen with a little bit extra work. If Phillippi can play consistently well and not be such a roller coaster a D! scholarship could be in his future...but his size will be an uphill battle for him trying to make it to that level

pioneers, what is he thinking of doing then?

Scouts know that one game doesn't make a season. Really confused how the 1st team all state goalie wouldn't be getting looks from d1 teams. You can be an average goalie on a team that goes far, Reider Jensen is a prime example, but he didn't get all state, 1st team no less.

hundreds of scouts and college coaches and assistants saw him play in the elite league. this summer He was on the wining best team. He was the number one goalie in that legue some stats wise (GAA,) but the scouts and college coaches still did not see enough. goalie is oe hard position to be a stand out in

I don't think anyone is hating on Phillipi, I know I wasnt. Just pointing out how hard it is for goalies to make it at that level. There are plenty of former all-state goalies who never made it at any level of college hockey.

I havn't heard what he is going to do. I would guess that he is going to need to go play some juniors and prove himself at that level. I will be at the Great 8 and will see if I can ask his dad what is up next.

What makes you think a short goalie can't do well in D-1? Look at these examples:

Jeff Lerg, Michigan State - 2007 National Champion, 2008 Hobey Baker Finalist. He is 5-6

Richard Bachman, Colorado College - 2007-08 WCHA Player and Rookie of the Year, 1st Team All-WCHA. He is 5-10

Jean-Phlippe Lamoureux, North Dakota - 2007-08 WCHA Goaltending Champion, 2008 Hobey Baker Finalist, 2nd Team All-WCHA. He is 5-8.

I think a short goalie with talent, like Joe Phillippi, will do well in D-1 hockey.

Is consistency a problem for Flip?

I would say he will go to the NAHL but I think he has a good shot of going to a D1 school.
