Wow! i cant believe that they just called it a tie. I'm sure the kids werent happy about that, despite how exhausted they were
I wonder what the final shots were!!

Those teams would be similar in demographic as say a Roseau v. Edina in Michigan. Marquette is blue collar and as far north in the U.P as you can get while Orchard Lake Park is a well to do northern sub of Detroit.
Interesting outcome. You gotta think that the boys wanted to finish that one out.
The lack of penalties on the score sheet was also interesting.
Club hockey is rampant in Michigan and no doubt their HS tourney doesnt have the same flavor as MN.

Wow, just called it a tie, eh? That's kinda weird, but I guess it works after playing all that time. I can't imagine how tired they were after it was called. The 96 Valley/East teams would probably think they were a bunch of panzies, heh.

They wouldn't pull the plug in Minnesota, it would cause a riot!

someone from the MSHSL move to MI so more teams can be winners and not feel the heartache of losing? You are both champions
Come-on a TIE!
At least do best of 3 Rock, Paper, Scissors

I don't get why they didn't just come back the next day to finish it or something. You can't tie. Hell, you can't even tie in the NHL. It's like the MLB all-star game. What is this, amateur hour?

Well, technically, it was amateur 5 hours.

A similar situation happened in the ND state tourney in 1977. Grand Forks Red River and Grand Forks Central played for the championship. It was also 8 overtimes with a 1-1 tie. The game started at 7 and they called it a tie after midnight. It was pretty cool having co-champions from the same town. One of those great HS memories you never forget!

Poor decision, especially given the fact that these are only 8 minute overtimes. They really only played the equivialent of less than four full overtime periods. We all know in MN, there would be hell to pay if a state championship game was stopped after that short amount of time.
In 1955, Minneapolis South beat Thief River Falls 3-2 in 11 Overtimes, and who could forget the Apple Valley/Duluth East marathon in 1996? Both of these games went about the same length as this one in terms of minutes played.
