Seeding for State Tournament

With the State Tournament approaching I thought I would run a question. Should only the top 4 be seeded or all 8 going 1-8.

I really don't care about seeding, but I am sure you will get some smoken opinions for this subject!

I don't think they should seed teams. To be the best you have to beat the best. That means if you face a tough team your first game you better be read for it.

I guess I can see the want to see the so called best teams in the championship. But really most people are going to watch the game regardless.

Doesn't make sense not to go #1-8. There is know reason the #4 should have a chance to play the #8. The top seeds should have the advantage, if not, don't seed.

I agree with you on this one, but who really cares what team you play, the best team should come out on top regardless!

Make it three.

However if you're going to seed, it only makes sense to do all eight.

i like how it is now

cause if you seed 1-8 it gives less of a chance for upsets in the first round except maybe 4/5 matchup

The whole point of seeding is to limit upsets.

no it isn't. the purpose of seeding 1-4 is to keep from having 1vs.2, 1vs.3 or 2vs.3 be a quarter final game

This has been discussed and debated so many times. But what happened last year in AA basketball should never happen; a team beat the best team in the quarter's, then the 2nd best team in the semi's, then lost in the finals.

How you seed is one thing, but seeding definitely should happen.

I agree it should take place, and i think 1-4 is the best way to do it
even 1-3 would be good

does anyone else agree that seeding 1-3 could work?

seeding 1-3 or 1-4 with random draw for the other seeds is complete nonsense. Why shouldn't a team like Litchfield (no offense but their record is not exactly stellar) have to face the highest ranked team in the field? I understand the idea of not wanting 1 vs 2 until the last possible game but if there is going to be any seeding it should be all 8.

i think it is fine how they do it now because having roseau vs. lakeville south would be less fun to watch than hillmurray vs. lakeville south

seeding 1-3 or 1-4 keeps the excitement in the first round games but doesnt force one of the top 3 or 4 teams into consolation unless they get upset

Yeah but Roseau could've played Lakeville South, but Hill-Murry drew them in the random draw. I think the main purpose is to try to get the top 2 teams in the championship, or really, the two of the top 4. What seeding the top 4 does is really just trying to get the championship to be a good game. They really could just seed the top 2 teams, and do random draws for the rest of it. I like the 1-4 now cuz it still gives the 5-8 teams a chance at winning a game at state. After all, each team had to win at least three games in a row in their section, so they should get some credit for making it to state. Also, I think it wouldn't be as fun seeding all 8. This way you get to see the random draws face off against the top 4. I say keep seeding the top 4, otherwise go back to random draws for the whole tournament.

This is pretty much what I have been trying to say. Seeding all 8 would take away the excitement. And yes Roseau or Edina could have drawn Lakeville South but the didnt and having Roseau vs. Blaine and Edina vs. Cloquet creates more exciting thursday games than one of them vs. lakeville south

However, I like the idea of seeding 1-3 better, i dont know why i just do. I think it would create more excitement drawing two teams for the one game (where the 4 seed plays now)

But, that doesn't make any sense.

If you have no seeding, you could have the four strongest teams all battling it out in one bracket and the four weakest teams battling it out in the other bracket...with a championship game between the best of the strongest teams versus the best of the weakest teams.

That sounds lame.

It seems that some of the coaches don't like the seeding the top four teams either.

I read that article this morning and I pondered it for a bit. I wonder how Pauly would answer a question like...would you rather have it go back to the old way and be assinged to play either Edina or Roseau in the first round? Would he be complaining if he drew Lakeville or Cloquet (not a knock on those teams)?? Heck no.

its also interesting to hear that 3 of the 4 seeded teams lost last year

so that leaves me to ask.... whos gonna be the only seeded team to win? :D

seeding

The purpose for the seeding was that people were getting all bothered when say this year if Roseau played Edina in the first round. Everyone was hollering that it wasn't fair that one of those teams couldn't be in the championship, so they decided to try seading the teams. Problem with this is, there is NO completely fair way to seed these eight teams since it IS the state tournement and every one of the eight teams will NEVER play eachother at least once in the regular season. So they seed only the top 4 and then have those teams draw straws for who they play. What this does in effect guys is say that they did not seed the teams 1-4 at all, they picked the top 4 teams in the tourney. Think about it, maybe the reason say St. Thomas Academy #1 in class a tourney is playing LF and not Litchfield (by many the worst in the field) is because really they don't know if STA is the best team.......The way they vote and count votes is completely whacked anyway and going by a poll is not accurate anyway. We did the old method for 50 some years and it was fine put it back.

they should just leave things how they are

if it were up to me i would seed 1-4 or 1-3

prefferably 1-3
