Lakeville South found its rhythm early in the first two periods. Rochester Mayo never found its rhythm.
The result was a 4-0 victory for South over the Spartans in a Section One, Class AA boys hockey tournament semifinal game at the Rochester Recreation Center on Saturday.
The top-seeded Cougars (13-11-2) controlled play and the scoreboard from the opening drop of the puck. South outshot No. 5 seed Mayo 34-12, including 23-6 over the first two periods. The Spartans were unable to generate many quality scoring chances and had their season come to an end at 15-11-1.
South advances to the section championship game, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at the Rec Center. It will be an all-Lakeville title game, as Lakeville North topped Owatonna 3-2 in Saturday's other section semifinal.
Saturday’s game was the second meeting between the teams in a three-week span. Mayo had South on the ropes on Feb. 1 at Graham Arena, but the Spartans let a 4-2 lead slip away in the final minute and settled for a 4-4 tie.
“We outplayed them and had more chances the first time,” Mayo coach Lorne Grosso said. “We felt it could have been a 6-2 game, but (South) deserved to win today.”
The game-winning goal came just 1 minute, 33 seconds into the game. South’s Lukas Allen picked up a puck that trickled through the feet of a Mayo defenseman and put a wrist shot past Spartans junior goalie Jordan Yaggy.
Two minutes later Nick Bailey one-timed a feed from Chris Cass past Yaggy for a 2-0 Cougars lead. Bailey was alone in the slot and Yaggy (30 saves) had little chance to react to his shot.
“Yaggy played well,” Grosso said. “There wasn’t much he could’ve done on most of those goals.”
Brandon Binder scored 1:33 into the second period and Bill Simon capped the scoring with 50 seconds remaining in the second.
“There was nothing here (Saturday) we didn’t expect,” Grosso said. “We just gave them too many easy ones and the kids didn’t respond to what they needed to do.”
The loss closed the high school careers of six Mayo seniors – the line of captain Tony Schultz, Jared Penz and Garrett Powers; defensemen Mitch Anderson and Travis Schubauer, and goalie Matt Steinmetz.
“Schultz really came on this year,” Grosso said. “He was the most valuable player on the team as far as always working hard. I’d put him out there all the time; he wins a lot of battles.
“Penz was another one of our MVPs. He didn’t play a lot until recently, but he was always positive, cheering the guys on. This was a very tight team.”
Mayo will return a talented class of 13 juniors next season. Asked what he wants that group to work on over the summer, Grosso said: “I don’t want them to wait until the summer. I want them to start tomorrow, start thinking about who might beat you out if you don’t put the work in.”
