I am trying to get my son into a good, powerskating camp for 2008. He has done it within the local youth program and is not happy with results---any suggestions on summer powerskating sessions in MN? (Going to be a bantam)

I'd recommend Minnesota Hockey Camps in the summer if you can foot the bill and afford 2 weeks. It's a cost vs gain choice. Those of you who know my Bantam son, results speak for themselves. But going for a week doesn't give you the buildup of 2 weeks of 2xday sessions with plyo's, weights, etc....

If not, just about any power skating clinic run by a hockey guy will virtually have the same goals and similiar programs. Having a player willing to bust his butt is actually the key ingredient.

I'm not a minnesota made fan, like most, or maybe I would be but my 96 is a goalie and I'm not trying him out for a machine team that doesn't train goalies at all for the same cost as it's players, but results speak for themselves there as well (see Edina), they run alot of off/in season sessions and hammer down the basics without dadding it...in other words, from my mouth to mouth experience with fathers who have had their players there, the coaches actually correct you during a drill if you jack it up. THey don't baby you, they coach you. So, take it for what it is..

Diane Ness is the best skating instructor I've seen but she is booked nearly solid. Check out Barry/Jodi Karn as well.

Do the Karns have a contact number or is there any info on them?

I agree that Diane Ness is one of the best. Also, Scott Steffen runs some pretty rigid powerskating camps. My sons have been to both clinics and I would have to say either 1 would be beneficial. I don't know what time frame you are looking at to sign your son up, but if you want to actually see how Scott Steffen runs his clinics he has taken the position this summer to coach the '95 Blades AAA hockey team. You could go watch and see for yourself at 1 of there practices which start late March early April

Depending how much want to spend, Pro Edge Power which I beleive is Dianne Ness, runs private lessons out of the Highland rink. It is called Pro Edge Privates, it is very good. They will sit down with you and your player, find out exactly what you want to work on, and in a 1 to 1 setting work on those skills. It isn't cheap, but it is good.

Scott Steffen has always managed to get a little extra speed out of my boys. I would highly recommend his camps. Robby Glantz was fine, my oldest did it one year, but a kid threw up in the trashcan on the second day and my son missed the third and fourth and fifth days--throwing up. Scott's camps are spread out, so if your child gets sick you won't be out all of your money.
