Rule?

I have a question on a rule. Last night in the Mankato West-Farbault game
the referee called a penalty I have never seen called. After West scored their 2nd goal, the team skates to the bench to slap hands and the goalie comes from his crease to meet them also as he has done on every goal they have scored this year. Never crosses the blue line and the ref gave him a 2 minute minor for leaving the crease. Mind you he did it on their first goal also and a penalty was never given. If it truly is the rule, why has nobody called it the previous 70 or so times he has done that?

Doesn't make sense to me. The goalie can not go to the Team bench unless directed by the officials. The goalie can not go past the Center/Red Line...Without being there I would say there is more to the story or a flaky official...Just my opion...

The goalie did skate toward the bench but stopped about 6 feet away.

This is sounding kind of bogus. Doesn't even sound like there was a warning. Of course I wasn't there, so I can't say for sure. Something seems to be missing.

No warning, nothing. Like I said, the goalie has done this every time this year and it has never been called. Everyone was baffled. Ironic thing is the Faribault goalie did it after their goal and no call, but that was before this call was made so maybe the ref didn't see it.

Oh come on... Refs see everything

Are you sure it was a penalty for leaving his crease? Maybe it was a delay of game for a long celebration? I have seen warnings given out for that, not that its right but just have seen them...

It's actually the blue line that he can't go past, not the center red.

Although I am surprised that an official would have penalized a team for the goalie joining the goal celebration, the rule is as follows:
During a stoppage of play a goalkeeper may not go to his
players’ bench without the permission of the Referee unless
he is substituted for by another player or goalkeeper. When a
substitution for the goalkeeper has been made under this
rule, the goalkeeper shall not resume his position until play
resumes, except that he shall be permitted immediate reentry
into the game when any penalty is imposed.

For a violation of this rule a bench minor penalty shall be
imposed unless otherwise provided in the Playing Rules.
I agree with others that there must have be more to the story than we know.

Thanks for the clarification MNreferee1. What a nit-pick rule. Bugsy pointed out that the Mankato goalie has done this all season. So why now, and why after the second goal and not the first? Perhaps there is more to the story. But, is it a coincidence that the penalty was assessed when West was already a man short - and that first penalty was on the goalie being served by a player? In other words, with the second penalty, the ref managed to have 2 players in the box serving goalie penalties. The West goalie tried to argue the first one (a trip or interference), and maybe this was the ref's way of sending him a message. Just a thought!

I agree, if the ref is that by the book,at least a warning was warranted before assessing the penalty. However, no one has been able to give me the rule on this

Must have been in Faribault. The refs probably got sick after that light show they have during starting lineups.

yea

I think it is the blue line the goalie can't cross, if he did then it is a 2 minute penalty, but almost always a warning will be given first. Last year in a Hastings game their goalie did it but the ref just let him know that he can't go to the bench unless instructed so otherwise. So it sounds like a bogus call to me.
