Go to the A tournament, it's a much better field. Century, JM, and Hastings are a combined 5-20. Mayo hasn't beaten anyone, the teams they beat have a combined 9-27 record. Apple Valley hasn't done any better, Buffalo and Fargo South also have losing records.
The A field has 6-4 Denfield, 7-1 International Falls, 6-3 Albert Lea, 6-3 Lourdes and Totino Grace.
AA - 1) Apple Valley, 2) Hastings, 3) Buffalo, 4) Mayo, 5)New Richmond, 6) Fargo S., 7) Century
A - 1) Int. Falls, 2) Denfield, 3) Lourdes, 4) Albert Lea, 5) Totino Grace, 6) Richfield, 7) Alexandria

Buffalo has had some tough defeats:
Wayzata 2-1
Maple Grove 3-2
Moorhead 6-3
Cloquet 3-2
The Bison are in a transition phase and when a couple guys understand they are leaders on the team they will be a tough out...For me Buffalo would be a much better team if some kids would focus on hockey and not mixing it up with the other team...additionally, I just don't get their dump and chase mentality and 2/3 forecheck...but that why I dont get the big bucks...
Buffalo plays a defensive style that keeps them in games but the way they play almost says 'we are not as good as you' and against better competition their defenseman need alot of help getting the puck out their own end and better teams seem to solve the forecheck without a problem.
I think Buffalo has kids who can make plays but need to unleash the kids and see what happens...again my amatuer opinion

Goldy - I agree with you, the Class A tourney has more highly ranked teams, but that does not mean the AA tourney will be boring.
Also, why are you such a Spartan hater....The teams they beat are now a combined 14-28 if you count the nice win over Grafton Friday night.
Mayo beat Hastings and AV in scrimmages....and from what I understand Coach Grosso rolls 4-5 lines pretty evenly in those games and 7-8 D since it is tryout time. If Grosso leans on Yaggy for the tourney - which I think he should - the Spartans are one of the favorites.
The quarterfinal games between Fargo South vs. Hastings and Century vs. AV are interesting. Hastings is getting it together now, so it could be a nice game. Century hung with Grafton, but have not beaten anybody either. AV is near the bottom of their conference, but has some tough losses in close games - like Buffalo.
Fargo South over Hastings 4-2 (a week ago I would have guessed 6-0)
Buffalo over JM 6-0 (the Bison D will give the Rockets nothing)
Mayo 5 New Richmond 2 (could be worse...this team is ranked #25 in the Wisc. polls...the #4 team Onalaska beat Lacrescent by four goals and Winona beat Lacrescent by 2 goals and Mayo beat Winonoa by 7!)
AV 3 Century 2 (OT) - (just a hunch on this one)
Buffalo 3 Fargo South 2
Mayo 4 AV 1
Consolation: Hastings 4 Century 2
3rd place: Fargo South 5 AV 2
Championship: Buffalo 2 Mayo 1

AV has won 2 in a row are the best team in this tournament by far they lost to eden praire, burnsville, Eastview, Rosemount and jefferson all were very good close games except eastview and burnsville but going into the third they were 1 goal games they are a much better team then most people think dont be surprised if they doinate this tournament. Whoever says mayo will beat them knows nothing about hockey. the only team that could beat them is century and maybe buffalo

just to clear things up i live in lakeville and have seen all of these rochester teams play the last couple years and they will all be terrible this year and apple valley i have seen play twice have out played there opponents just have had poor goltending but they have recently solved the goalie problem and are a team to watch out for the rest of the way.

Tender, please start using periods when you write. And anyone who says Apple Valley will dominate any tournament in Minnesota knows nothing about hockey.

Nut, why if I don't pick Mayo to win it must be because I hate them?
I don't, the fact is they haven't beaten anyone yet. You point out Grafton but 1-6 Century took them to OT and Century isn't a very good team this season, they were very similar games by the way. Beating Austin, Mankato East, etc. doesn't impress me. Mayo lost their two games against quality opponents this season, and after West dismantled Owatonna I'm not sure how good Owatonna really is.
Just because they're Mayo doesn't mean they deserve my respect as a good team. They'll earn that when they beat someone, this tournament field isn't very strong but after that Mayo has Hibbing, Virginia, Duluth East, Mankato West, Albert Lea, and the Lakeville schools. They'll have their chance to prove themselves. Mayo is a top 3 team in the Big Nine, a top 3 team in 1AA, but that isn't saying much as 1AA is the weakest section in the state and the Big Nine has 3-4 of the poorest teams in the state.

Goldy - Were you at the game Friday night? Had Mayo played like that, they would've handled Owatonna. They finished well and played physical!
The D still made some mistakes, but played better than normal.
Everyone was raving about Grafton, but now it is not a good win?
Isn't blasting teams 11-1 worth something?
Is Century that bad? Earlier a 6 goal loss to Edina was called a good loss, but now they are horrible? I just don't think you are giving them enough credit is all.
The Spartans had the same number of shots as Roseville, but played their #2 goalie that game; they gave up quite a few to Grafton, but some many were during the PP and from the outside. They have scored 54 goals in 8 games, which is good against any teams.

Woulda, coulda shoulda, didn't. You're dealing in hypotheticals here

Who was? Not me. They're not as good as Owatonna, West, AL, or Mayo.

No it's not, especially when these teams are among the worst in the state and when you're skating your top line every other shift in an 8 goal game. Mayo has never had a problem running up the score on teams.
Is Century that bad? Earlier a 6 goal loss to Edina was called a good loss, but now they are horrible? I just don't think you are giving them enough credit is all.
There are no good losses and yes Century isn't very good. They can't score.

Point taken, but I don't care about goal margins when you're running up the score.
What gets me about Rochester people is how they view their teams. They beat up on smaller class A schools and can't compete on a state level with the big schools. They consistantly have football teams rated in the top 10 in the state yet lose first round section games at home against 2-6 metro teams. Great you beat a small school by 30 points or 10 goals, what's the point? That team is going to get knocked out of their section in the first round anyhow. Of the major boys sports (football, hockey, basketball, wrestling, and baseball) only their baseball teams show any consistant success. You can view a 12-1 over Austin as a great accomplishment, I don't. Beat Edina, Roseville, somebody - anybody. good[/i]

So is Owatonna a good team then? I know it is hypothetical, but had the Spartans beat them 2-1, that would change your opinion entirely?
Their margin of victory was greater over Farmginton.
Maybe Grafton is not good, but many on here consider them a top five ND team, maybe even top 3 since they beat Fargo South earlier this year.
Another interesting thing I saw Friday night was Mayo's top line of Alexander, Whitney, and Fisher did not score...but the 3rd line scored three goals. Things that make greater things seem possible - especially with Yaggy playing as well as he has so far this year.

personally i thinik Lourdes is the best team in the city they are the only ones that play competition. and in the past they have acutally beaten good competition. this year they have not beaten any good teams unless you call albert lea a good team. and ya the alexander fisher whitney line does good against the austins and the mankato easts, but what have they done against mayo "better" competition?

Well, that line was on the ice 5 of the 6 goals against Farmington that many people like to talk about. They were also on the ice 2 of the 4 goals against Roseville.

I have no opinion on Rochester teams but it appears they are all down this season...I am interested in finding out opinions on the new Rink?
I hope Mayo and Lourdes do a great job this week at Kiwannis

Should be good to see the Spartans play this week I hope they do well.
I have seen Lourdes and they are a pretty good group.
The Alexander kid and Thauwald kid at Mayo are legit prospects.
Also the goalie is a strong kid and if he stays focused and works hard he can be a good one.
Good Luck Spartans I hope that they and Lourdes reach the finals this week.
I hope Century can find some offense as their goalie has been playing well. I am excited to have all the games at Graham so I don't have to decide which side of town to be on.
Good Luck to all the boys.

Nice homer picks John although I do agree that Lourdes has a good chance of winning. Mayo has a shot, but only because the field is weaker than the A field
