What a coach must know;
1. The ability to evaluate talent accurately

The ability to garner respect from teenage boys....
(by the decisions he makes during the season, his hockey knowledge, and the way he relates to them on and off the ice).

The ability to teach and enforce what you taught.
Thats the hard part.
Show kids the right way to play and then make sure they do it right all the time.
Anybody can evaluate talent. Most people sitting up in the stands can spot the best players after a shift or 2.
Teaching is the most important part and if the coach does that right, everything else will fall into place.
Recruitng kids away from Johnson is easy.

Communication skills and the ability to have players believe in what you are teaching them.
Unless you have both, it's a tuff road during the season and in everyday life.

The best and the worst players are simple, but the pile in the middle is where it gets tough. You have to factor in where a player is and where they will be down the road, and that
ain't easy.

IS , You have coached so you know and ,of course, you are right. It is difficult .
But I dont like it when coaches think that thats thier main function. Too much time is spemt on talent evaluation and not enough on talent development...ie teaching.
The only exception to that is ,of course, if its at an orphanage.

Communication is the key. If a coach can communicate to a player & parents the benefit of attending a private school (say HM) then he is 1/2 way home. All he has to do then is open the door on the bench & say, "next five", and things take care of themselves.

My ideal coach would be everything mentioned above...plus
I think it's important to be a coach off of the hockey rink. Help guide these boys past high school. Help them to network. Explain options. Be there for some of the h.s. summer tournaments and/or elite games. Boys love coaches who show up.
