This morning, the Edina crews were spreading water on the outdoor rinks. My kids were so excited.

Please share how outdoor ice is progressing in your parts, when you get that first skate in, and whether you skate on a lake, pond, backyard, or city rink.

And you northern folks go right ahead and brag a little. I am jealous.

Spin, this is great news. I'll be up between X-Mas and NY. My son is dying to skate outdoors.

We are going to attempt to turn our barbeque area into a mini-rink with a net. We figure it's big enough for our goalie to take shots and just the right size for the mites to skate around. The trampoline net will be handy for preventing pucks from flying out of the yard. Any McGyver-like advice on how to pull this off would be welcome!

Just down the street, we have two families with rinks in their backyards. Two blocks away, we have a pond and an outdoor rink with a warming house. Now, if we could only do something about the whole global warming thing, we'd be set.

My home office window faces the rink across the street and there is no activity yet to be seen in Woodbury. Edina once again gets a jump on us...

Thanks for the starting this thread! As I went to get the paper this morning and my hair was a little frozen by the time I got in the garage, the first thought was, who will be making ice today...I was even more excited as I got in my car and saw the temperature at 5 degrees. I love this time of year. I encourage all parents to have that talk with their kids tonight about staying off ponds until dad checks them out first.

Hopefully this year will be a great year for outdoor ice!!

Fridge in the warming house
Nice grill right outside the warming house
New flood lights for late night hockey

The kids are looking forward to spending time on the rink. We already have some scrimmages planned out.

Anyone know where to get a good deal on a couple good nets?

They make regulation nets, a 6x1 pond goal, and a 3x2 mite goal. I don't know how they rank pricewise. You might also try stores like Westwood.

In duluth we are expecting to have ice as early as this weekend!

No Doubt!

Last night I walked out on the pond behind the house and is was solid. My kid doesn't know yet as I wait 2 days and walk it again to make sure. I live in a Northern burb along 694. The pond is only 2-9 ft. deep. I didn't even hear cracking that I have always heard in the past.
In our city they don't flood until Christmas week, yet we have a rink with a asphalt base down the street.

My association is interested in doing an Outdoor Refrigerated Ice Rink. Anyone have any experience with this? if so, I would be interested in details like cost, maintenance, refrigeration type, base setup, etc.
also, can it be used in spring/summer for rink soccer or roller hockey.

There was a nice article in Let's Play Hockey about St Paul building 3 new artificial outdoor rinks. It was 2-3 issues ago. I might still have the paper. PM me and I can email it to you.

Edina is also trying for an outdoor rink. Their cost estimate is $1,000,000. According to the LPH article, St Paul's are $300,000 each. Go figure.

I was in roseville last weekend for a tourny and they have a big outdoor rink it has a 1/4 mile speed skating OVAL around 4 pond hockey rinks. It is actually called the OVAL, you should go check it out.

Teak wood boards aren't cheap either Not to mention the stainless steel goals with silk netting.

I'm watching FOX9 this morning and M.A. Rosko is doing a live shot from downtown St. Paul from the Wells Fargo rink. Free to skate, free to rent skates if you have a Wells Fargo card. Sounds like a fun weekend thing...though the people who are currently skating outside at 7:45am look like they are FREEZING!

Colby is ready in Woodbury and has been skatable since tuesday.

My son's pond has 9" to a foot (of ice).

Holds his weight.

I was walking home from school today and i noticed that the rinks just had a little bit of ice on them. I am so happy that they have started flooding and i looked at the weather reports and it looks like its going to be a good ten days for making ice and skating outdoors not to bad of wind and high twentys and low teens so enjoy it i know i am going to

The outdoot is where hockey players really become better and where you get alot of memories i am going to have such a fun year on the outdoor

I live on Island Lake (in Hermantown) and
I was skating on the pond last weekend, im skating on the lake on Sunday
