State Soccer

I'm really not sure what criteria they used to rank these teams. If you look at it you can see what I mean. For example, in AA undefeated teams got seeded #6 and #8. Pretty odd, but oh well.

Anyone know if state soccer games are televised?

Don't know what more Apollo could have done, yet they still get the 8 seed. Oh well, looks like they'll have to knock off Anoka to show the rest of the state that they are legit....

The seeding is done kind of how the seeding is done for hockey, except for they do all 8 instead of just four. The coaches of the teams in the tourney get together and rank them.

try improving strength of schedule, having more common opponents and having a stronger program history. From all the games I have seen in both A and AA the seeding for Apollo is appropraite. There are some teams sitting home that would shred Apollo. Be happy that they are there

Why should the strength of a programs history have anything to do with the seeding of one years state tournament?

Crap - I had a nice answer and hit the wrong key. Now I will just hit the high notes (or you may view them as low notes)

Simple - there are more politics and egos in soccer.
1) They view outstate teams as the weak links since very few have ever performed at a high level. Duluth and Moorhead have had some good teams on occassion and a team from there might have garnered more attention with their seeding arguments because of past history.
2) Spring/Summer Club Soccer is ranked far more competitive than HS soccer and is where players develop and get noticed by colleges. Unfair as it may be, St.Cloud is not viewed as one of the stronger club programs in the state and that could have also been in the back of their minds when the coaches were trying to estimate how good is Apollo?
3) The seeds that are higher wanted to position themselves against newcomers rather than against a so-so record of a perennial team with a winning soccer history and tradition. People know that if a Wayzata or EP are at the state tourney, that you want to avoid them to begin with.

collusion? I don't want to go that far, but I would bet there was some talking going on among the TC coaches prior to attending the meeting since many know each other very well from club soccer.

Apollo got ganged up on. Have them use it as incentive and be the Rudy of the state tourney.

If it is any consolation - I think Anoka is over-rated and Apollo was better to draw them rather than Apple Valley or EP (lake conference bias). Anoka plays an aggressive direct style of soccer. I had them getting number three in my mind.

Sorry but there seems to be a lot more egos and politics involved in soccer behind the closed door of seeding that most people don't want to acknowledge. There is a huge bias against the outstate teams because of reputation. If the Apollo coach doesn't have an accent and TC soccer relationships it makes it tougher to get that foothold of respect.

I will also be at the dome to watch the teams that make it there.
Last year soccer finally got it right by having all the championship games on the same day.

if you get by Anoka, I will see your team down there against EP (more than likely)

This may revive St Cloud Alliance

-Hmmm, the 18-0 Blake team with 3 GA all season gets the #2 rank. SOS this and that, c'mon.
-The 19-2 Duluth Marshall team, who has played good teams get the #5 rank, who do have a reputation, c'mon.
-If SOS is what matters, why are two Lake conference teams with 1 and 2 losses each ranked #4 and #2?

Hmmm, I am a huge fan of seeding, for the obvious reasons of why it happens in everything beyond high school. It is simply a good idea. But the results of this and hockey last year are why I am behind either non-coaches that vote regardless of who makes it or a computer program that is unbias and ranks them.

I hope we can both be there watching the Eagles soar through state together.

Yes they did. Really surprised about their seeding, as they do have the tradition of being good.

Its funny because the Anoka kids said that Apollo was the best team they had played all year, funny they got the one seed since their schedule was so tough
