Closed tryouts - Edina tryouts

After reading the Edina tryout posting I remembered a situation about Lakeville Youth hockey that may be of interest. About 8 years ago Lakeville closed their tryouts to all parents. It all came about when tryout scrimmage sessions were setup as 1st year players against 2nd year players. The parents of the first year players were very upset watching their kids get dominated. This was the first and last time this tryout setup was used. Another issue that year was one of the tryout scorers and the same person in charge of logging all the scores was also a parent of a player and he was caught doctoring the scores of another player that was a friend. The Lakeville hockey board blamed the parents for closing tryouts but in truth they were covering up their own mistakes. One side note, the person in charge of putting together the tryouts that year is now the Varsity coach at LSHS and the player that got his scores doctored was the nephew of the coach at LNHS. Funny world we live in? I agree that coaches and players should pick the teams. Parents should be left out but do not need to be shut out. Some parents are total basket cases but by in large most are decent people. The same can be said about coaches and players. Discipline those that are out of line or breaking the rules but do not punish everyone for the behavior of a few.
