Very true. They do make a lot. The exceptions you name are so true though. It would be great if more people would be so loyal to their team and be playing for the game of basketball (or whatever your sport) instead of for the money.

The least of this guys problems are with the law.... in fact they're his best chance for survival, it's the people that he could implicate that he's afraid of, and with good reason, they can make you into little pcs that no one finds.......ever!

This is what I'd call a control freak...he already was in charge of the game but nooooo! that's not good enough, he has to taint the betting world as well to benefit from that too.....! Greed plain and simple.

This story is no longer about the NBA, it is about professional sports and the games we enjoy. By the time the story goes away, it will dwarf BALCO and steriods in baseball. We now know that organized crime and gambling has infiltrated the industry (officiating) that affects the outcomes of the games we enjoy. If they have gotten into the NBA you know they are in or attempting to enter any sport that Vegas will take a wager on.

To muddy the water even more, I believe we will find out that the NBA knew he was crooked or something was wrong as far back as '05.

I heard something today about this guy's body of work.

When there is too much money on one side of a game Vegas will move the line to entice people to take the other side. In games he worked, the team getting the late action covered the spread 10 consecutive times. The chances of that happening are around 1,500 to one.

David Stern has always said his officials are the best monitored officials in pro sports. Every game is broken down statistically and any anomolies that indicate poor performance would be detected. I'm thinking teams getting late action that cover ten consecutive times should have been detected by the league office before some reporter in Phoenix.

This will be worse than the black sox scandal, as baxetball refereeing is so subjective anyway. What little credibility they had is shot.

Actually with instant reply, how much can these guys get away with in any sport?

Baseball...the home plate ump has got some leeway and could effect the outcome.

Football...holding calls are pretty arbitrary or easy to ignore.

Hockey... penalties are pretty judgmental.

But Basketball? If Kobe hits a wide open 3, you cant call a foul.
It has to be the toughest sport to control the outcome without being blatant.

Another thing that the accused is being linked to is the over-under.

If he calls a lot of fouls the total score will swell as the clock stands still.

I don't know about the whole statement about the NBA officials being the best monitored officials in all of sports. Then again, maybe they have to be. In terms of officiating, I'd say that the NHL has the best of all the major sports, (if you still call the NHL a major sport as I do). I do know that most if not all of NHL officials have to go through psych evaluations during the playoffs to make sure the pressure isn't getting to them, though that may be unrelated to this situation.

Then NBA probably has the worst officials, while MLB and NFL officials are pretty close and not far behind the NHL. Though being able to use the instant replay on many plays in the NFL really gives those guys some extra help. You don't get that baseball and only on goals or non-goal situations in the NHL.

You all have seen a BB game. Last five minutes lasts 30.
Foul after foul and a trip to the line.
There is plenty of time to control the outcome.
In hockey, just take a look at the WILD/DUCKS series. They let the Ducks Niedermeyer get away with cross checking in from the net, hold, and picking.

The Wilds Boogaard goes into the corner on his first shift and the call boarding.
The game the Wild won was the first time Pronger was called for a penalty.

I disagree. I think its the easiest.

I remember the NBA final in 92, Bulls vs Blazers. Jordan could mug Drexler without a call, and if Clyde breathed on Jordan he went to the line.

The rabbit hole is getting deeper, it sounds like Tim Donaghy may be turning over the names of up to 20 NBA officials with connections to gambling.

If this is true, the NBA is toast and all major sports better do some digging of their own.

If I were the NBA, I'd wanna know (and be able to prove to the public) that this is an isolated incident. There is already a cloud over them as far as being scripted and the Donaghy incident didn't help. They wanna put this to rest ASAP.

You mean drag up, if he and a possy of NBA Refs were altering games because of their own greed or addictions they are the bottom feeders of the sporting world. If it takes a rat to expose it, so be it. Donaghy has to sleep at night knowing he was the whistle blower, not me, clean it up.

who said anything about altering games??? do you know somethign that I dont? last I heard is he and some of his ref buddies were at a casino, what nobody knows. All I was stating is that he had to drag his reffing buddies down because he can't take the heat on his own for what he did all by his self!
