I don't think anything is set in stone yet, but it sounded like next year's U-18 team (this is the one that Helgeson and Michael Fink were invited to try out for) only had one open spot, and that will likely be filled by David Warsofsky, who is a defenseman from Massachusetts.

One post???? Maybe Seth's dad??
Regardless, I have seen Seth play. Personally, I think he is the real deal. if he works hard to become a better skater and more skilled. If he does that he will play for the Gophers and will (if he stays healthy) play in the NHL. Basically, it's up to him.
How's that Dad?

Seth Helgeson is one of the most over rated players i have seen, he plays defense well but not well enough to play on the u.s under 18 develpoment team. Looking at his points it seems that most of his points came against weak teams as he had about 4 or five goals against mankato east which isnt a very strong team. i just think that he is not going to be ready for the u.s under 18 team and we will see if he fills that spot.

There's a lot of high quality defensemen out there that aren't good enough to play on the U-18 development team. Making the U-18 team doesn't guarantee success and not making it doesn't guarantee failure.

I'm guessing that is true of 99 percent of the players who play hockey....They score more often against weaker teams.
common sense.

I agree. Plus, points don't tell the whole story.

When evaluating Dmen, you don't look at number of points scored. Maybe assists might be something you'd look at in terms of how they move the puck.
I'd look at skating ability, how they handle themselves in the defensive zone, positioning, leadership ability, vision, puck movement, size, mobility, stickhandling. Do they minimize mistakes?
Way too much emphasis on scoring especially goals.
Helgeson does well with many of these. When his skills catch up with his size, he'll be a very good one. But like all kids his age, he has alot of work to do.

He is going to get better. he was a natural forward and got moved back to defense when he got with the high school team. he is still pretty young, i think he will develop better if he happens to make the u18 team or leaves to go play in ushl

Seth should goto the USHL if he can, if not do a split season with a jr team, Owatonna is right up the road or Rochester might be a better fit because he will get more games in before and after.
Either way he needs to play jr.s this year if he wants to get a jump start on his D-1 future.
Seth Helgeson is a great kid!!! He will do well.

Just read on Gopher Puck Live that Seth Helgeson is going to play for Souix City next year.
Can anyone confirm this?

I also think that he is one of the most overrated players. He gets pissed off if he makes one mistake that means nothing at the time and then he makes more mistakes because he won't let the first one go. That doesn't sound like NHL material to me, only time will tell if he can become a composed man, rather than a short fused teen.

i am so sick of everybodies ignorance. seth helgeson is going to play for the gophers, he is now playing for sioux city and he will play in the NHL if he stays healthy. just because you're jealous of him doesn't mean you can say he isn't going anywhere.

Seth will mature in the USHL, or he'll grow stagnate. He will surely benefit from the coaching in Sioux City and come out a very mature and solid player. I know that it had to be a tough decision for him to make, but he'll do well down there.
Good luck to him.

Your son (I am presumming this) is a high profile player so get use to the jabs of jealousy from many on these forums. Most have not or will not ever have the chance to be the type of player that he is.
Blue & Gold's comments are accurate. He will benefit from the coaching in SC, at least this year as long as Siciliano is there. I speak from experience on this one...
If you want to PM me, feel free to.

I have seen Seth play. He is a quality player. I have no doubt he will play for the gophers and will probably be an NHL draft pick.
Observer, keep in mind this forum is laced with opinions. Good opinions, bad opinions are going to be all over the board...........freedom of speech???
I don't know how a parent (presumably) can get that sensitive over opinions on this forum. If you don't like the possibility of off-handed opinions............don't look!
Dear parent, enjoy the ride. You and your son should be proud of HIS accomplishments.

perssonally, The kids that usally are presumed to be good when they are in highschool dont go all the way. Ive just noticed this, like Webb or w.e, hell anyone could do as good as him with the best team in the state, that has nothin to do with that but, Fraise was suppose to be good yea anything but phanaminal

When you say Webb I am assuming that you mean Michael Webb of Holy Angels. Just a thing to keep in mind he made the final 20 for select 16's.
Here are his numbers in New York this week.
Min 75:00
Shots 47
Saves 43
GA 4
Sv% 91.49- 7th out of 24
Games 3
GAA 1.33- 7th out of 24
I would say that those are pretty good numbers especially against, what are supposed to be, the best players in the US.
