Herb had a rough go of it in recent years, and it was clear from listening to him on the radio that his health was deteriorating, but even still, there was always a comfort in hearing him call games. It's really too bad that Gordo is now the voice of the Twins. Ugh.

The last 3 seasons, the Twins have lost a key "family" member in the spring - Bob Casey, Kirby Puckett, and now Herb Carneal... If I were with the Twins, I'd be heading to camp with a little trepidation in '08.

That is really too bad...

You can't replace a guy like Herb Carneal....

He's been calling the Twins since the year I was born. What a career. He will be rememered for a long time to come.

I have never known twins baseball without herb, he will be missed.

Herb Carneal, along with Halsey Hall, are two of the names which will always take me back to my youth. They were both outstanding.

He put me to sleep when I was younger and would fall asleep listening to him call the game...

I never appreciated Herb when I was a kid. Play by Play guys simply told you what was happening, and didn't seem to add much to the broadcast. I liked Halsey Hall's "colorful" ancedotes, and my Dad and I tuned in to listen to him as much as the game. I didn't really know how good Herb was until others started doing the call, and I've disliked them all. Now that Herb has rounded third and headed home, I'm very thankful we had him all these years. R.I.P. Herb, you will be greatly missed.

The passing of Herb takes away another guy from an era where the announcer just gave you the game.

John Madden's flamboyant style seemed to revolutionize sports broadcasting in the 80's when he started screaming "Whap" and "boom", X'd and O'd with his telestrater, and handed out turkey legs and all kinds of nonesense. Maybe it wasn't Madden at all, maybe it was that improved TV production was changing the annoucers' roles. In any case the Herb Carneal's or Vin Skully's were forgotten or no longer appreciated for their true talent.

The other night I finally broke down and watched Miracle and it was odd listening to 2006 Al Michaels try do the 1980 Al Michaels, it just didn't work. I wonder if Al, now known as one of the most arrogant announcers in the business, understands that the Olympic hockey run made him, or at very least put his career in fast forward. Al couldn't go to Lake Placid to call the Olympics today because it doesn't have a 4 star hotel.

Sadly today, our dumbed down culture needs the announcers to make the game interesting for us. It's the same reason why Joe Buck, charter member of the lucky sperm club, feels a need to call out players instead of the action and it's the reason why a H.S. Junior starts a Lou Nanne thread every March.

Anybody locally catch the piece that KARE 11 ran on the news last night? It was a piece Randy Shaver did in 1996 a month before Herb was inducted into the Hall of Fame. It's a pretty cool story, and features a couple of pretty good clips of him with Halsey Hall - who referred to "panty hose night" as "panty waste night" and also started doing his color commentary into a stopwatch rather than the mic.

It's a nice piece to remember Herb by. Those of you that missed it, or weren't able to see it wan watch it here.

I remember listening to him late at night when they were out west on my transistor radio when I should have been asleep.

Being old enough to remember when the only way to catch a Twins game was on WCCO, Herb made the Twins my favorite team. I've never been a great Viking guy, probably because baseball is a radio game and Herb made it so good to listen too.

I grew up listening to Herb do Twins, Al Shaver do North Stars, and Ray Chritsensen do Gophers, I couldn't tell you who does Gopher games or even the Wild today, but I'll always remember the sound of those guys voices.

If you have the means, get MLB extra innings it's worth it just to listen to Vin Scully do Dodger games. I get home from work late ad catch the last few innings of Dodger games just to listen to him.

I agree with that. If I'm not mistaken, Vin doesn't have a color commentator with him, does he? He does the games solo.

I agree completely, and Joe Buck has been in my top 3 list of people I want to punch in the face for years. (Along with Subway Jerad and Paris Hilton)

I disagree, I like the John Gordon/Dan Gladden duo. They crack me up at least a time or two per broadcast.

He will be greatly missed by the entire twins organization and twins fans everywhere.

Twins Manager Ron Gardenhire said it best before Wednesday nights game. He said Herb is probably up in heaven right now calling a baseball game.
