Something I noticed about Laura May of Mahtomedi is that she plays both ends of the ice, and even though she can out skate most of her team mates for a breakaway everytime she touches the puck she brings the puck up with her line and they get 2 or three shots on goal rather than just the one she would have gotten with a breakaway, She plays the best positional hockey that I've seen, makes the people around her better and is a true leader. She would be my choice by far.

If Ms. Hockey comes out of the NW conference I think Amalee Windmeirer would be my choice. If you ever watched everything she does on the ice she would also be your choice.

ive seen her play a time or two and i agree. the puck is like glue on her stick. and she is deffinetly not selfish.

She's one of the best people that I've come across in my time as a coach. She's very unselfish. She's highly talented.

In terms of overall point production check here:

Of course the decision should not be based solely on who is the points leader but it seems to always be a major component of who wins.

Nice to see some Class A representation on this list. Technically I guess half the kids play on Class A teams, although BSM opted up to AA.

AND - all these gals are VERY deserving. Congrats ladies!!!

I assume Goalies will be out next week...

Ms. Hockey finalists announced

The 10 finalists for this year's Ms. Hockey Award were announced Thursday, including two players from top-ranked Eden Prairie.
Eagles teammates Ashlan Lambert and Maria Stoa were on the list along with Blake's Katharine Chute, Roseville's Erin Cody, Farmington's Erin Johnson, New Prague's Jenna Kilpatrick, Mahtomedi's Laura May and Amanda Trunzo of Benilde-St. Margaret's. Coon Rapids also had two selections: Terra Rasmussen and Amalee Windmeier.

May and Rasmussen have committed to play for the University of Minnesota. Lambert, Rasmussen and Windmeier are the only defenders among the 10, which were announced by the weekly newspaper Let's Play Hockey.

The award is presented to the top senior girls' high school player in the state on Feb. 25, with voting based on talent, off-the-ice involvement, citizenship and coachability.

As the top points getter in AA, and against a tougher SOS than the other leaders, she should certainly receive serious consideration! The fact that she's a straight "A" student with a scholarship to a top Ivy League school shouldn't hurt either.

FWIW - that entire group is amazing. WOW!!! I wish them all the best of luck, and looking forward to see some of them at State soon!

Ms. Hockey

The entire group is talented but there is too much emphasis placed on points. Several of the nominees have a significant percentage of points from a few games where they have gotten 5 or 6 more points in the game. In fact several of the nominees have 40% or so of their points in 5 or 6 games involving "weaker'' teams.

Penalty kill, clean play, plus/minus, and leadership are also important skills or factors to consider.

This is what LPH says...

Ms. Hockey is presented by LPH and the Minnesota Wild to the top senior girls’ high school hockey player in the state of Minnesota, based on the following criteria: academics, community/extra-curricular activities, citizenship, coachability, and, of course, on-ice performance.

I'm not saying that a Class A player can't be Ms Hockey, I'm only saying they might be judged tougher and maybe that's legitimate. Regardless of what kind of stats one rolls up in class A, there will always be those who say "yeah but what if she had to play AA?".
OK, I'll play along with this--throw stats out the window and go see these players in person. I've seen 7 of the 10. I'll take Catherine Chute. I have no idea what her stats look like compared to the others. I'd bet the voters aren't real concerned about stats either.

And I too agree with you and your selection, having now seen all but one of these players in action. Chute is comfortably in the top ten in scoring, probably top 4 among seniors; haven't looked lately. But it's more than stats that count and she has all the intangibles and from what I saw is an unbelievable 2-way player. IMHO she would be the most impactful player on any team, regardless of class, but we'll see how the voters feel.

Many worthy candidates as always!
