Is Andrew Zerban of Elk River coming back, I don't believe I saw his name on Elite league roster?

to the Q

How does a Minnesota get be able to skate in the Q?

Was Zerban in the Elite league last year?

He tried out this year. Guess most of the teams were already picked before tryouts.

Zerban needs to score 30+ goals to raise his stock back up to where he was as youth player. Do that at ER and people will notice. Less penalties and work on being a 2-way player and the potential is there. He is on his 2nd HS coach so that must not be any issue.

I'm not 100%, but I'm pretty sure that you're only restricted by the draft process. That is, if Brandon was drafted by the WHL, he couldn't play in the QMJHL unless his drafting team (and every other WHL team) didn't want him. Since he wasn't drafted by the WHL at all, he's a free agent in the eyes of the CHL, so he's no longer restricted to the WHL.

Gatineau brought him in for a tryout (which I can only assume was initiated through some personal connection) and signed him (likely because of the personal connection).

I was just told last month that the "O" couldn't draft my kid because he lived in Minnesota, no exception unless he got residency or if dad worked in Canada.

Correct, the OHL can't draft your kid. If he goes un-drafted in the WHL, he could then be invited by any OHL team to tryout (my potentially erroneous assumption).

Thanks EO; question: is he eligible if he doesn't get drafted in his first year of eligibility?

Not sure. Obviously that doesn't apply to Brandon Smith.

Out of curiosity, any reason why you'd prefer the OHL over the USHL? Ties to Canada at all?

My guess is more games/potential quicker route to the promised land; look at last NHL draft and a lot more guys drafted from Canadian Juniors than USHL. I don't want to open a can of worms since this topic has been debated significantly.

One of the more significant tangible difference is the CHL (WHL/OHL/QMJHL) keep their elite 18 & 19 year olds and even a few under-sized elite 20's, where the USHL gets decimated in those age groups with their top players leaving for college. Keeping the elite older players makes the CHL leagues much tougher to play in than the USHL, hence, better competition & development for high end players.

In fact, the CHL actually increases in numbers of elite 18 & 19 year olds, as early NHL draft picks who sign contracts become inelligible for NCAA play (i.e. Khaira, Michigan Tech) and they often get assigned (or strongly recommended) to play with CHL teams by their NHL clubs.

I kinda figured scorekeeper would feel the need to chime in, not that anybody was asking him to.

Still curious though, any connection to Canada? You say "my guess". He's your kid, isn't he? Have you not talked to him about it?

Didn't realize I needed an invitation. It's a public forum isn't it?

I didn't see anyone asking you for an inquisition, although I kinda figured you'd feel the need to pry.

No personal connection - He was scouted by several Q teams at the Toronto prospects playing for the Blades this past spring...Since he had no contact and undrafted by the WHL, he is a free agent in the CHL. He had 4 teams wanting to bring him to camp. He choose Gatinoe. He had no tryout, it was based on the scouting.. I think he is a hell of a player and wish him the best of luck.

So he is not going to Waterloo later in the fall for their season?

I see Mickelson is in the Elite D League. Not going to Omaha now?
