#34: Cloquet

55.98 pts
--0 state titles
--5 state tournament s

Cloquet’s finest season was arguably in 1991-92 when they took state champs Bloomington Jefferson to overtime in the Tier I state semifinals before losing. They also took home the consolation title in 1982 (without Corey Millen) and 1993 (when they entered the state tournament with a 24-1 record). Cloquet also has 15 section finals (5-10) to their credit and has made the 7AA semifinals in nine of the past eleven years.

#33: Breck

57.38 pts
--4 state titles (Class A)
--8 state tournaments (Class A)

Breck ranks second to Warroad in Class A teams since the two-class system began, winning the state championship four times since 2000. In Class A, they have made it to their section finals twelve times (8-4) and have failed to make it to their section semifinals only twice. In addition to those state titles, they have captured third place once and had two consolation titles.

#31: Duluth Denfeld

The Hunters make the list on the strength of three tournament appearances from 1986-89 when they captured third place twice and were consolation champs once. They moved to Class A in 1997 and have made it to their section finals only twice since then, losing both times.

Easy. By having done well enough in those three state tournaments to rack up the number of points which put them at #31.

Just getting to the tournament won't do much. Winning games once you get there (Denfeld as an example) or by making a huge number of tournaments (White Bear Lake as an example) will result in a high score.

{sigh} Good ole Central. Had I gone Top 100, they would have made the list. At #100. :)

#30: Bemidji

61.43 pts
--0 state titles
--6 state tournaments

Bemidji’s finest decade was the 70’s when they ranked #9 in the state in total points as a result of four state tournament appearances, topped by a 2nd place finish in 1974. They added two more appearances in St. Paul in the mid-80s but have not made an appearance at State since 1986. A 23-3-2 finish and top seed in Section 8AA this past season provides some hope for the Lumberjacks’ faithful.

#29: Richfield

71.78 pts
--0 state titles
--6 state tournaments

Richfield ranked #9 in the 60’s in this survey, appearing in three straight state tournaments (1962-64), coming away with a consolation title and a fourth place finish. They finished just shy of a state title in 1976, were a surprise in 1986, were upset by Duluth East in the 1991 quarterfinals when they had possibly their best team. They moved to Class A in 1995 and have struggled since, only appearing in three section semifinals since then.

#28: Minnetonka

79.59 pts
--0 state titles
--5 state tournaments

The 2009-10 season was the Skippers finest, finishing runner-up to Edina at State. Their program has grown stronger through the years since their first state tournament appearance in 1985 (remember that marathon Thursday night quarterfinal game against Jefferson?). Since the two-class system began, Minnetonka has been in eight section finals (3-5) and fifteen semifinals (8-7). This team should move up in the Top 75 in coming years and would move up significantly with a state title or two.

#27: Hastings

80.14 pts
--0 state titles
--6 state tournaments

With a second-place and third-place finish at State, the Raiders edge out Minnetonka for this spot. In addition to the before-mentioned finishes, Hastings also has a 4th place and two consolation titles to their credit, and are 9-6 overall at State. 1999 was their best shot, getting to the Class AA title game before being blanked by Roseau. They have not played in a section final since 2001.

#26: Apple Valley

83.64 pts
--1 state title
--5 state tournaments

Apple Valley’s first appearance at State was in 1981 when they brought a losing record (due to having to forfeit a number of games over a player eligibility issue) in and took home a 4th place finish. Their best season was in 1995-96 when they had a 27-1 record en route to winning the Class AA championship. It took them fourteen years to return to the state tournament when they took 4th place in 2010. Since 1981 they have appeared in sixteen section finals (5-11) and in eighteen section semifinals (16-2). They also rank #7 in the 1990’s decade in total points.

question; you did factor in 'Tonka taking 3rd in '90(?) when they lost to Roseau in the state semi's and beat Anoka in the 3rd place game, and 'Tonka winning the consolation bracket (I think that was in the last decade).. right?

(only asking because of what you said about Hastings.)

With your last two updates - low 30's and high 20's spots, it appears that we are starting to see some meat on this bone... :D Very fun to follow...

Thank you for doing this!

Not as fun for me as I already know who ends up where. :)

I'm not poring over this to know how you are handling mergers and splits. Edina should finish at #1 unless you count Edina and Edina East as different schools. In that case I'm guessing Roseau is #1.

Eveleth might be in the Top 5.

And, as much as a lot of us hate to say it, Hill Murray will have to be in the top 5 or 10 also.

#25: Elk River

86.77 pts
--1 state title
--6 state tournaments

Elk River has had a team since the 1950’s, but made little noise until they finished fourth at the 1993 state Tier I tourney. From 1997-2005 they went to State five times, winning it all in 2001 with a 29-1-1 record. During that span they were 5-1 in section finals and 6-3 in section semifinals.

#24: Eden Prairie

95.28 pts
--2 state titles
--6 state tournaments

The rap on Eden Prairie until recently was that they couldn’t win the big one. From 1992-2008 they went to State four times but were only 1-4 in championship bracket games, 2-8 overall. Winning State in 2009 and following it up with another title in 2011 has silenced those critics. Indeed, they rank #6 in points over the past decade.
