One hour scrimmage. Anoka was missing 3 forwards, OMG was missing 2 defensemen. Anoka essentially played their 1st and 3rd lines the entire time and rolled 6 D with goalies spliting the time, OMG was missing a goalie so one goalie played the entire time.

OMG is a quick skating team and led 1-0, Anoka countered for 1-1, then 2-1 OMG, then a nice shorthanded breakaway goal for 3-1 OMG, then 4-1 OMG at the midpoint of the 2nd period. Anoka battled back by scoring 2 goals from down low before the 2nd period ended cutting the lead to 4-3. Third period was short (8 minutes running, 2 minutes stop). Anoka got a face-off in the OMG with 2 minutes remaining and tied the score on a nice passing play from behind the net and top shelf shot with just over 1 minute to go. OMG put some pressure on in the final minute, but it ended in a tie. While both teams have things to work on, both should be very competitve this season.

a nice match between Elk River and Edina tonight. Two very talented, very skilled teams. Edina is deeper and took advantage. The top player on the ice tonight was #10 from Elk River. I saw a lot of excellent 1st year skaters on both teams. The rich get richer:

Elk River had a "non-goal" right before Edina buried its 3rd tally late in the 3rd period. I had a pretty good vantage point, the puck was definitely in. Really, any time the goalies water bottle pops in the air, the twine had to be hit. These 2 teams will be contenders in March.

Can anyone confirm the number of 1st year pee wee's on the ER team? I was told 9, if thats true this has to be one of the youngest PWA teams.

Vadnais Heights Sports Center opened Nov. 1. The Center is still to be finished and officially has the Grand Opening Saturday, Nov. 20 from 2-5 in the afternoon. The Center is on the southwest corner of Highway 61 and County Road E (just north of the 694 Highway 61 exit. The Center consists of two sheets of ice with one rink having a 1,000 seat capacity. Both sheets are the same size and both rinks have two sided seating. The Center also offers a slightly less than 100,000 square feet of soccer fields under a domed structure.

What is different about the center is that it integrates restaurant and retail shopping spaces. The spaces are scattered around the center to create a retail and youth sports complex.

Ice arena development in the past has been to associate the local ice arena with city and school structures mostly funded by the city. Burnsville has its City Hall, Police and Fire collocated with its ice arena and Eden Prairie has its three sheet of ice integrated with the High School and incorporates a Community Center.

Other arenas have been developed in a scattered approach over time, driven by limited funding. As an example, Minnetonka has two sheets of ice as part of its city structure-one is home to the Hopkins High School; Minnetonka High School has its own rink behind the high school-a terrible place to park on a busy school night; and Hopkins has the Pavilion that is a combination indoor and outdoor facility used mostly in the winter).

Though the Vadnais Sports Center facilities resemble Woodbury and Stillwater, the complex (sports center and surrounding buildings) is unique in that it combines retail shopping and restaurants. The goal of the new complex is to become a regional focus for sporting events, but appears to be geared to a one-stop place for a family with kids involved in sports. The complex is not funded by Vadnais Heights and city taxes are not being used. In fact, the complex is expected to add revenue to the city property tax rolls.

So why is this under the Peewee A scores? On Nov 11th, this score from a game played at the new Vadnais Heights Sports Center:

Last week, Mahtomedi looked to be world beaters taking Highland to the cleaners 9-2 at Highland. The Zephyrs lost two days later to Tartan 3-1.

White Bear Lake and Highland opened the game playing physical and both teams had their opportunities to score in the first period. Each team had pucks clank off the pipes, one Bear shot caromed off a Cap stick, off the goalie’s blocker and off the pipes upper right corner to the far boards. The first period was scoreless.

Multiple penalties finally caught up to the Bears midway through the second period. Highland took a 1-0 lead on a power play goal. By then the Bears had also lost their “unfairplay” point. But they evened the score in the 3rd when a referee unwittingly trapped the puck inside the Caps zone and took a Caps defenseman down in one single play. This allowed the Bears to set up in the Cap’s zone and they applied the pressure and worked the puck well until they finally scored on a shot the trickled off the goalie.

With the clock counting down the last 10 seconds, the Bears got a last chance to score when a puck rebounded high off the Caps goalie, came down in front of the net. A Bear pushed the puck at the open net only to have the goalie, looking back to find the puck; turn his trailing leg just right to turn the puck aside. A great save even though the goalie was looking the other way.

After the game the Bears traveled north to play in Duluth’s Tommy Williams tourney. They play Chaska, Duluth Lakers and Thunder Bay in pool play today and tomorrow. Depending on how the Bears do, they will play one or two games on Sunday. Monday they come back to play Mahtomedi, the team that beat Highland 9-2. That will be an interesting game.
