I vaguely remember it. I remember laughing my arse off too...

My source tonight said that it was the 79-80 season. He remembers it distinctly because they were listening to it on the way back from the airport in Winnipeg. It's possible that I have the wrong coach.

It was Ikola as coach and it was East. West beat Roseau 2-1 a few days later. I was there but also too young to remeber the exact details. It was 6-1 going into the third. Rumor or legend (I was not in the locker room) has it that Ikola asked a Roseau kid if he should bring back the JV for the third. That probably didn't happen but that was the between period speech. Roseau comes out and scores six unanswered for the win. I believe the kid Ikola "made" the JV comment to later went on to the Gophers and NHL. There are at least three guys posting here that were on that Ram team that can correct my mistakes.

So far we have the 7 or 8 goal lead down to 5, MUCH more believable.

Fish tale. More clarity on year, teams, coaches, margin, and final score would be nice.

Edina West 1981 was awesome and got upset by South St. Paul in the first round of the state tournament. They were #1 going into the Civic Center. The game ended after the Cougars netted a tying shot in the final minute but were ruled offside.

I don't know how good East was that year. It is possible they were a little down.

There were enough underclassmen on East and West that the 1982 team was set when school started. The merged school beat Mariner 6-0 in the very one-sided final.

I'll believe East 1980-81 season.

My source is sticking to his year.....79-80 season.....the year before his oldest son was born. Sorry about the 7 or 8 goal lead. Against Edina, even 5 was impressive.

I can not remember the year, but it was late 70's but I do remember the game. Roseau had a nice rivalry then with Edina. Many people had left Memorial in disgust after the Rams trailed 6-1 after two periods. The game was on KRWB 1410 and people who left were listening. As the Rams closed the gap, people began to filter back into the arena. The final was 7-6 Roseau. Either the weather was warm outside or the amount of people at the game, cause the ceiling of the old barn to drip. I can still remember the bumps that were forming on the ice in places from the dripping ceiling. The new arenas and the repairs to the old ones are nice, but something has to said for the excitement of the game and the rinks 30 years ago!

If "the Brotens" were playing for Roseau it was not 79-80 because Neil was busy doing something else. I think Neil graduated in 1978 and Aaron in 1979. "The Brotens" makes is 77-78, no?

Yaso - I don't recall periods being less than 15 minutes. Wow, those were pretty short games!

Better question - what are the odds these two teams actually will play each other at the X for the championship(if they both make it to state, they woulod have to be 1 and 2 seeds, right?)? Both have sections and then 2 games at state to make it possible.

I'd say 25% at best. How many years has a #1 or #2 rated team not get out of sections? Ask Holy Angels the last 2 years....

Maybe that shows my age, but I remember it. Not sure when that changed to 15 minutes, but you are just getting warmed up at the 12 minute mark.

I'd have to say both Roseau and Edina are who we thought they were. That's why we take the d@mn ice! If you want to crown them, then crown their a$$. But they are who we thought they were!

The 3rd period saw 2 goals coming from Steve Storo, two goals coming from, (soon to be Gopher)Billy Yon and one from Keith Beito. THe game went to overtime and Keith Beito fired a shot that hit Larry Goos and deflected into the net for the winning goal. The Rams outshot Edina East 51 to 35. It was the first win over Edina since 1968. Aaron Ness' dad, Jay was also a member of that Roseau team. Hopefully thsi will put that to rest. What that has to do with this years teams, I am not sure, but some interesting history anyway.

Had this Board been active in 2000, no doubt someone would have started a topic about "Elk River or Eden Prariie? Who's the Best?". Well, guess what happened to those teams that season.

Being crowned "the best" by a group of anonymous posters during the regular season doesn't mean much. It's certainly inconsequential to the teams who step on the ice and actually play the games.

1980-81 season. Edina West went into the state tournament #1 in Minnesota and lost to South St. Paul. The underclassmen from both East and West won state in 1982 - Brian Cutshall, Wally Chapman (I think, but he might be a year older), the Devoe brothers, Dan Carroll, Bill Brauer.

Roseau went to state in 1981 and lost to Irondale (which probably had Scott Bjugstad) in the first round and Edina West in the consolation bracket. State was won by Jefferson with 8 losses during the season, mainly due to the difficult Lake South schedule.

I'm not sure how good Edina East was that year. They were down, I just don't know how much. An incredibly exciting game for sure.
