Nickel. Gotta give West a quality win against Fergus Falls if you give Lourdes a quality win vs Alex.

Not that it matters, because a wins a win and a loss is a loss. But, A.L. played without 2 forwards last night including Bowman, one of their top players on their first line.

Seedings out Friday. Should be interesting.

Will the coaches take the "what have you done for me lately" approach, or look at the entire season from start to finish? It's happened both ways in the past.

too bad about bowman he's a good player. is he back for sections?

coaches usually look at head to head first. which helps lourdes and west. west drilled new prague 7-1. even though new prague is playing better hockey than any other team right now, it's hard to ignore a 7-1 score. otherwise they would be in consideration for a #1 or #2 seed.

This section is shaping up to be one of the best in A. I can't wait for the section tournament to start.

Albert Lea 18-4-0
Quality Wins: 6 (New Ulm, Century (2x), Denfeld, split w/West & Mayo)
Quality Losses: 2 (Ifalls, Lourdes)
Bad Losses: 1 (Owatonna)

Rochester Lourdes 16-6-0
Quality Wins: 7 (RW, Northfield, AL, Alexandria, Blake, Breck, MW)
Quality Losses: 4 (Ifalls, Cathedral, Little Falls, NP)
Bad Losses: 2 (Denfeld, STA) - these are bad losses only because they got blown out, not because they're not quality opponents.

Mankato West 19-2-0
Quality Wins: 4 (NP, Northfild, Mayo, split w/AL)
Quality Losses: 2 (Lourdes, split w/AL)
Bad Losses: 0 to West's credit, they have taken care of business against the teams the 'should' beat

Red Wing 13-6-2
Quality Wins: 6 (NP, Northfield 2x, Orono, Breck, So St Paul)
Quality Losses: 5 (AHA 2x, STA, Lourdes, Tartan)
Bad Losses: 1 (Shakopee)
Ties: their ties are a wash... one good tie against Mahtomedi, one not so good against Prior Lake

New Prague 16-6-0
Quality Wins: 5 (Orono, Denfeld, Delano, Lourdes, split w/Northfield)
Quality Losses: 5 (RW, AHA 2x, Eau Claire Memorial, Northfield)
Bad Losses: 1 (MW) again because of the margin, not because of the level of competition

Northfield 13-10-0
Quality Wins: 1 (NP)
Quality Losses: 7 (AHA, RW 2x, NP, Denfeld, Lourdes, MW)
Bad Losses: 3 (Faribault, Shakopee, Richfield)

Since not all of these teams have played each other, and the only quality common opponent for all these teams is Lourdes - albeit with very mixed results - let's try to put a point system in place that rewards quality wins and losses, but severely handicaps for bad losses.

Something like this?
Win = 5 points
Quality Win = 10 points
Quality Loss = 5 points
Bad Loss = -10 points

Team Wins QW QL BL Total
Albert Lea 18 6 2 1 150
Roch Lourdes 16 7 4 2 150
Mankato West 19 4 2 0 145
Red Wing 13 6 5 1 140
New Prague 16 5 5 1 140
Northfield 13 1 7 3 80

I was going to try to extrapolate this out over the rest of the season, but let's just see how things shake out. AL as one more quality opponent (Mayo), Lourdes has 2 (Totino-Grace and Mound Westonka), Mankato West has 1 (Century), Red Wing has 2 (Hermantown, NP), NP has 1 (RW), and Northfield has 1 (AHA). Since Quality Wins are so heavily weighted (as are bad losses), Lourdes has to be in the driver's seat, but any one of the top 5 could still conceivably be the #1 seed... using this system.

nickel, northfield's loss to faribault was not a bad one it was only 1-0 and they scored with 5 min left also red wings first win over northfield was a one nothing game until northfield pulled its goalie. also how is ablbert lea's win over new ulm a quality win?

Faribault got beat by Albert Lea 10-2 and 9-1. They got beat by West 10-2 and 8-1. They got beat by Lourdes 7-1. Normally a 1-0 loss to Faribault would be a Quality Loss, but considering their track record against the other top teams in 1A, Northfield's loss to them has to be considered a bad one. I realize it was the first game of the year... but still.

I'm not sure why I considered AL's win over New Ulm a Quality Win. I was just assuming New Ulm had a Quality team this year... to be honest I never looked at their schedule/results. After seeing it, you're probably right, it shouldn't be considered a Quality Win.

Fergus Falls in #80 in PS2, Alexandria is #60.

We could sit and nitpick what constitutes a Quality Win all day long... but I think the point is that within the top 5 of this section it's pretty much mix-n-match.

Hey guys I hate to tell you but there is no such thing as a good loss. There are lossed to good teams but a loss is never good otherwise we wouldn't base sucess on wins and losses.

After Tuesday's results, I think you have to go with the following

1. West 21-2 have taken care of business.. no bad losses... lost to Lourdes without 2 of their top 5 forwards. Split with AL. Best record overall in section

2. Lourdes. Beat West by 1. Beat Al handily and beat Rw by 1. Lost to NP. Got throttled by Denfeld. Loss to Mound doesn't help them.

3. NP playing very well as of late. Bad loss to West early in the season and loss to Northfield hurts them. Probably playing as good as any tean in the section right now

4. AL. Loss to Mayo Tuesdat night drops them. Nobody really wants to play them now. Hard working, well coached team

5.Red Wing. Kind of an enigmatic team. They have some great wins, but also some not so good losses. Had they played more of the 1A contenders, it would have given us an easier read on them.

Just my opininon guys and we will see on Friday how it shakes out. Hopefully all of the coaches seed based on integrity which I think they will

I'll throw my hat in the ring. Davey, I respect your braun by putting Mankato West #1, only to be followed up by a great post by Puckhandler. I would sure like to be a fly on the wall when the seedings are being set! So...here we go...

1. Lourdes (they beat West, after all)
2. West (probably has the most talent, but disciplined enough?)
3. New Prague (if 'what you have done lately' comes into play. Best 'team')
4. Albert Lea (Mayo loss cost them dearly. They'll recover)
5. Red Wing (Which team will show up for playoffs?)
6. Northfield (Done after first round)

My prediction for Section 1A Champion and State Tournament representative: Albert Lea (they know what it takes to get there...)

Regardless of the seedings, this section tournament is going to be ridiculously crazy. Seriously, when was the last time Section 1A had this many quality teams in the mix?

Coaching experience and playoff experience will be the deciding factor in this tournament. There is only one team in this section with excellent coaching experience and good playoff experience and that is Albert Lea.

Coach Nystrom has been coaching for a hell of a long time. Probably since before some of these other coaches were even born! Albert Lea has made 3 trips to the State tournament in the last 4 years. Albert Lea knows how to play under pressure and they are probably extremely pissed off right now.

This will make for an interesting tourney......I am glad the Med City is close, I will get to see each game! Good Luck to everyone.

Davey -no way West gets #1 over Lourdes-they'll take into account head-head play-

Lourdes plays the toughest schedule by far in the section and despite the Mound loss, they'll still get 1 seed

More importantly-the top 4-5 teams would still be top 4-5 in Section 1 alone (A-AA mix) :D

I don't think the coaches will take into account teams being short players. It'd be nice to see West with the 1 seed but i just don't think it'll happen with that loss to Lourdes. Either way 1-3 really makes no difference. The 4/5 game will be a battle and so will the semi's. Where you're seeded come semis, it makes no difference. Maybe west'd be better off with a 2 seed, as then they wouldn't have to drive up to rochester early saturday for the noon game.

as mentioned on here before the rec has s#!t for ice. the later in the day the worse it will be. west is a speed team. that ice will do them no favors.
you'd think they'd learn and cool that place down, but it never changes.
lourdes 3 big head to head wins should solidify the #1 spot, but they are an independent, which could work against them with the big-9 and missota coaches favoring their conference teams.
