I am happy that the forum pulled Davey's earlier post re: West hockey players. I hope in the future Davey shows some class and respect before he post another comment. I also hope those players did not get a chance to read it.

I'm guessing he's banned. Have a nice day Davey!

Should be a good game today with West and Mayo!

I'm going to take the upset (if it's really an upset) of Mayo over West 5-4.

Scarlets win 6-1. Hey at least you were almost close with the total amount of goals scored. I think there were 30+ penalties called in this game. Can anyone confirm?

30 PENALTIES? How much blood was on the ice?
There was bad blood at the end of last year's game - big meltdown.

Sorry people, not banned. Just edited the post as it did not really come out as intended. If I offended you otimer, my apologies. Never said that a West JV player didn't work hard.
Nice win today by West in a penalty filled game. Felt sorry for both teams in the way this one was called. No flow to the game as the refs decided they would be the center of attention in this one.

How many times does this happen? That the refs decided they would be the center of attention?

I've seen it happen a few times.

Who were the ref's tonight, there are a few guys that like to make sure they are in charge.

Yeah, I think Mayo could have kept the score tighter if they didnt get hosed with all the calls. West had just as many. The biggest disappointment was that I think it got into the head of the Mayo goalie and he made a poor decision in starting a fight with one of the West players. Single game suspension for each of them. Shouldn't hurt West but, losing their starting goalie in a section game versus Lakeville South might burn Mayo.
On another note, the ref swore at the players with :30 seconds left in the game. Is there somewhere that they can be complained about? Very unprofessional and bad example to set for the kids. I'll start a new thread.

Coaches rate the officials. I believe if they give the lowest rating a written explanation is sent to the MSHSL.

I saw the West/Mayo game, I didn't think the refs made themselves the center of attention, the players did. Theose were two dirty teams, the penalties weren't of the obstruction type, they were of the dirty type. Example; Mayo checks a West player at center ice creating a turnover, instead of getting up and playing hockey, the West player chases the Mayo kid into the zone and hits him - the puck is on the other side of the rink. Do you let that go? Or a West kid is standing in front of the net and a Mayo kid takes a run at him and puts the shaft of his stick in the middle of his back, the puck is at the point. Do you let that go?

Mayo takes stupid penalties at stupid times, hey it's 5 on 4 why don't I take a run at this kid and put my 2 fists into his face? At some point, maybe after West's 3rd power play goal, you'd think Mayo would decide to play hockey, they didn't they continued to take runs and be chippy. I felt bad for Yaggy as he played well but got no help.

West has a very good power play, and this was without Lieverman. West is very good, Mayo helped them out a ton though as I don't think West had an even strenght goal all night.

West involved in a game that gets been taken over by penalties/poor sportsmanship/dangerous play/near-riots? .....
I find that hard to believe.

west had one even strength goal... it's kinda hard to score even strength when it's only 5 v 5 for 10 minutes total the entire game. I agree the kids took dumb penalties, but the ref had a head too big for himself. he literally called everything for both teams. it wasn't hockey... classic southern minnesota reffing calling every little thing. they need to start letting the kids just play. it'd make the game better and faster. This ref was the same ref that gave leivermann his checking from behind DQ that put him out 4 games. The st peter kid couldn't even skate, there was no way that was a DQ. again, mayo goalie and west player basically were wrestling eachother. that's not a DQ. give them both roughing coincodentals. i just hate when refs try to make it all about them

SE MN, I see Lacresent won again last night. Talking to some West people last night, they said they were in your Tournament a couple years back. Said something about nicknameing your coach, "Coach Shrek" (must be the big guy). Things must be turning aroud there, they weren't to positive about the tournament and the team back then, but it seams like they are having a good year now and things might be changing.

Best of luck and we will be following you guys.

Thanks for the support Jim. Groth (The Big Guy) is a little over the top. Klingsporn has tempered that some.

We are having a great season compared to past La Crescent teams. Unfortunately the games we are playing are not getting us ready for sectionals. I think if Klingsporn would have had the team the last several years, we would be playing much tougher competition right now. Klingsporn has been trying to pick up some tougher games this year, but it has not materialized yet.

I also heard a rumor that the coach for Lacrescent quit, is this true?
Why would a coach quit half wat through the season with a 14-3 record?
No way, Something is gotta be up, SO MN or LAC1421 whats UP?
Coach "Shrek" Randy Groth got into some trouble that none of the players were told about and it is under my impression that he was asked to resign and if he didn't resign he would have been fired. So now coach Andy Klingsporn has full control of the team and is getting extra help from assistant coach Todd Vessey. Amen.

While I never feel that officiating is the sole reason behind a team losing a game, I thought that Saturday was really close to it. I've seen those refs numerous times this year and have been very unimpressed. The one ref who made the most calls i think feels like because he's on the ice, he needs to have a say in the outcome. He has reffed youth for a long time and he has screwed those games up also. Is this really the cream of the crop for officiating in Southern Minnesota?

On another note, does anyone know how they determine officials for the section tournament? I wouldn't want this section tournament to be 'tainted' with bad officiating. It would be a real shame.

Golfreak, well put. Hopefully the two refs that reffed the AL-West game get the Section Championship. That was a great hard fought battle that was well reffed.

Very true davey but watching that game in the stands I felt that west was just too fast for AL and all they could do was hook trip and hold, but nothing was ever called. I mean I am a big fan of letting the kids play, but i thought there needed to be a few penalties called in that game.

Each school is assigned to an administrative region, there are 16 of them, 8A and 8AA. Administrative regions run the tournament, not the actual section. Last year hockey section 1A was ran by administrative region 2AA. This year hockey section 1AA and section 1A are being administered by the same region, 1AA. Administrative 1AA includes Austin, AL, Rochester public schools, Waseca, Northfield, etc. The administrative section is responsible for scheduling officals, a few years ago they contracted with the Mankato group and it was a fiasco. The past few years they have had the St. Paul group do the games from the semifinals on. The big advantage is that these guys haven't seen these teams much. Officiating isn't an issue or least hasn't been in a number of years. That said quaterfinal games can be troublesome, Century/Dodge County was terribly officiated last year for example.

ya i agree, i mean the game was just way to fast for Albert Lea thats why they won and outshot West and controlled the game. But West really took it to them and Albert Lea should of had somewhere around 15 penalties for all their hooking!

Coach Fired/Resigned?

Is this public info, was there any information in the newspapers over there?

Are there any legal issues binding?

Sounds like a cover-up to me.

Anyway, looks like it's the best thing for your program, and a long time coming.

How long was he the coach there?

Randy was head coach for the last 4 seasons. He had his best talent last year and he did not do the team or Eriah Hayes any favors. Kids ran the team. He frankly does not know much about hockey. A lot of wind. Every year he stirred up a lot of controversey. He was always looking for the shock factor when dealing with kids and adults.

There has not been anything in the paper. I am sure that he had to resign or the school would have fired him. It is the best thing for our program. Andy Klingsporn applied 4 years ago and it is too bad he did not get it at that time.

Albert Lea hasn't had a game since last Tuesday when they beat Owatonna. They had their game against Faribault moved to this coming Thursday and today's game versus Winona to February 15. As far as I know, the team is healthy and is ready for the stretch run with two big games in a row, both on the road. First they go to West which will play a significant role in section seedings and the Big9 and then they go to Mayo for a tough one on the road.

Any updates on the other teams?

Sounds like this was a very good game. Nobody should count out the Trojans when it comes to Sections. Very dangerous first line. If they get solid D and goaltending, they will have to be reckoned with.
