The MSHSL should just rent out Ridder for all metro-based section finals. I can't imagine there being a ton of empty seats. Yeah, it's a commute for some, but if you're going to be playing at the X at state, there's going to be a commute anyway.
The undersized section final venues for the metro just gives the appearance that there is large demand, when in fact, it's more about lower supply and turning people away.
Ridder cannot accommodate the demand for tickets to Section 4AA. Neither can Aldrich, but at least fewer get turned away.
Well seeing as Ridder seats an extra 200 I'd say it probably can. The new UST arena certainly will.

According to the always reliable internets, the capacity for Ridder (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ridder_Arena) and Aldrich (
https://maplewoodmn.gov/1528/Aldrich-Arena) is the same at 3,400. Braemar's (
https://www.edinamn.gov/1224/Ice-Time) capacity is 2,300 and the Bloomington Ice Garden's (
https://www.bloomingtonmn.gov/big/bloom ... ice-garden) is 2,500, so an additional 900 people got to see the Edina-Wayzata final live last night and it was still sold out. The St.Thomas-Cretin final on Friday is already sold out. I used to go watch the section finals every year, but haven't seen one live since they moved to the smaller venues.

I have a hard time believing BIG has a larger capacity than Braemar.
Perhaps those numbers are according to the Fire Marshall. I swear, 90% of a Fire Marshall's job is to prevent people from going to sporting events.

I thought the same thing, it seems like Braemar should have more capacity than BIG.

The numbers for BIG that the city puts out is the spectator capacity of the entire building not just Rink 1.
The reconfigured Rink 3 will have about 400 more seats than current Rink 1.

high seed for semis and then neutral site for championship based on location.
choices are usually thief river, bemidji or st cloud
So they just reserve a night for the finals at all 3 rinks? And then what are their factors for deciding once the 2 teams are known
I am not sure how they reserve them but they try to split the mileage.
In this case Bemidji has about 90 miles and Moorhead about 110 miles.
Section 8A rotates from East grand to thief to Warroad.
It be nice if they could find a way to work the Sanford Center in there, maybe doing a 8A/8AA double header. I know logistics could be hard and maybe Section Admins, if they are different, don't want to split possible revenue.

won't happen
East Grand Warroad and thief want the traffic.

Thanks, I figured there had to be a reason.

Whoa! I'll cop to being the dumbest guy I know, but I'd never have guessed the cost would be $100.
On the other hand, that reinforces my thought that the MSHSL is run by public school administrators who have no experience with market discipline. Think about it, $100K to hold the class A consolation semis there? I mean it's bad enough for AA.
Should flip the script. Put section championships at Mariucci and moved state consolation games to Braemer/BIG.

But how would the MSHSL justify forcing season ticket holders to buy 12,000 tickets to consolation games at a 2,000 seat arena?
Not that I necessarily mind that they squeeze every dollar they can out of the AA hockey tournament. Hockey subsidizes other sports. You do what you have to to keep the train rolling.
