I’ve seen the two Section 8 candidates in this discussion multiple times and there is likely, id even call it literally, no chance that they could win the AA tournament. I honestly don’t think it’s even a discussion. Great Class A teams. Very good. But winning the AA tournament is a completely different discussion from that. At one point as recently as even a few weeks ago I thought Hermantown or SCC would have a chance. Events since then would tell me they wouldn’t either.
Umm. So Warroad v Moorhead?? East Side? So you are saying the section 8 team is not the best team this year? Ok. As I asked earlier.. Blake??
Was a fun discussion while it lasted but the answer has revealed itself down the stretch.![]()
Could a Class A team win it all this year if we still had single class tourney?

If memory serves me, Single A schools won the AA tournament in 1999 2005 2006 2007 2008 2012 and 2017

I see two thing happening with a single class tournament (8 Teams) in regards to class A teams.
1. If the sections are competitively balanced with top teams, it will be just a recreation of the AA tournament filled with AA teams with occasionally a single A team making the tournament. Maybe a Hermantown or SCC makes it some years, but forget about the Greenways, Alexandrias, Thief River Falls, Luvernes, etc.
2. If top AA teams are pulled out of some sections as some have suggested, it does make the path much easier for some A teams. But it also weakens the quality of the tournament. While it may mean more A teams, it also means that top AA teams that might normally make the AA tournament are now playing each other in stacked sections. I don't see pulling Moorhead and STMA out of 8 and Andover and Elk River out of 7 to make it easier for an A team to make the State tournament a good thing for hockey.

Wouldnt be pulling anyone out or into a certain section, it would just be reverting to how all sections are set up. Section 8 is NW, 7 NE, 6 central generally. And I believe 2 or 5 was somewhat of a mix of N metro and Eastern MN.Goose21 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 12:22 pm I see two thing happening with a single class tournament (8 Teams) in regards to class A teams.

That said, Elliott's post above is kinda the point.

During the 80’s. Region 2 was comprised of a St. Cloud subsection, Duluth subsection and North Metro Subsection (Irondale, Mounds View, Anoka, etc),
The St Cloud winner was paired against the Duluth winner in the semi’s with 2 metro teams squaring off at the St. Paul Coliseum.
If this were to happen in today’s world, SC Cathedral and Hermantown would be on same side of bracket, thus eliminating one of those schools from contention,

For what it's worth, Hermantown in those days wasn't in Region 2, but instead in Region 7 with the Range teams. The Duluth bracket consisted of the 4 (then 3) Duluth public school teams, Cathedral/Marshall, and Cloquet only.blueblood wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2020 2:25 pm During the 80’s.
