I think Luverne gets the 4/5 seed out of respect for their record. I don't see NP being seeded, but they are going to give a top 3 seed all they can handle.

1- EGF
2- Hermantown
3- SCC
4- Mahto/TG
5- Luverne

Orono
NP
Chisago

Mahto could make a case for the 3 seed if they win tonight since they didn't play SCC. Plus, who wouldn't want to see Luverne take on the tourneys only private school?

LuVerne is a great story!! No way they are ranked and they will go 0-2. Not a hater...actually a fan. Young team that will be around a while. I wish them best of luck!!

A lot of teams would go undefeated with Luverne schedule. But we have not had Cinderella in awhile...so go get em boys!

I don't agree. I think they are getting at least 1 win.

I do agree with you that they are young and will be around a while though.

People from Luverne, aren't u tired of having this same ranking seeding conversation on a new post. The answer is the same. 5 teams are seeded based on coaches voting. An undefeated season is great but it doesn't warrant a higher seed than rankings or coaches, the coaches have proven themselves yearly that this seeding works. If to say Luverne get a random draw and they are as good as they think who they play shouldn't matter.

If TG
#1 EGF
#2 Hermantown
#3 #4 #5 Cathedral, TG or NP
Draw = Orono, Luverne CL

If Maht. Wins
#1 EGF
#2 Hermantown
#3 #4 #5 Cathedral, TG or NP
Draw = Orono, Luverne CL#1 EGF
#2 Hermantown
#3 #4 #5 Cathedral, Orono or NP
Draw = Luverne, Maht. CL

Here's my prediction of the bracket draws
1. East Grand Forks
Orono

4. Cathedral
5. TG or Maht.

2. Hermantown
Chisago Lakes

3. New Prague
Luverne

What was there, about 3 or 4 posts pertaining to seeding on the 3A thread? Out of 48 pages?

I posted this topic because I was curious what everyone else thought the seeds may be. Obviously some think Luverne should be seeded, while others don't.

I feel there is a chance they slip into one of the top 5 seeds, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

From a fan's perspective, it would be cool to see how each coach ranks the other 7.

Here is what i see.

Hermantown

EGF

Cathedral. Seperated themself by beating New Prague on the road. But barely.

After that all teams have very similar scores against common opponents. One of those teams is undefeated. The rest are not.

Luverne

New Prague

Totino

Orono

Chisago

Looking at the schedules of the 6 teams outside of EGF and Hermantown, the common opponents are all very close. Its really easy for people to mark off Luverne because they come from a historically weak section. This doesnt work for this season. Cathedral beat New Ulm on the road, and Totino at home. Earns them a 3 seed. They do have some ugly losses though.

Every team has ugly losses to explain.

Find out in the morning.

Luverne could be the three seed folks. Talk about traditional hockeyminds exploding.

As somebody that has watched both Luverne and Chisago Lakes play against my sons team, there is no comparison; Chisago is better, more speed, more grit and also has goal scorers.

Which of cathedrals losses to you think are "ugly"? 5 of their 7 losses came against the top 8 teams in state while the other two were against solid teams who would compete for the 1 seed in 3A?

Yes and that has what to do with it?

Chisago Lakes is better.

Good luck in the tourney.

I haven't seen Luverne play. Are you saying they are better than everyone but Hermantown and EGF entering the tournament, or you just want them seeded 3rd because they haven't lost? In which case, why not 1st?

I'm pulling for Luverne but can't see them higher than 5. The coaches will give the high seeds to teams they are familiar with.

I agree. Ugly was the wrong term. None of them were ugly, however they exist. Luverne has no losses to explain.

That's true. I was confused at the word ugly cause I think all 7 teams they lost to would beat or be a good game with Luverne

Of course it was I won't have expected any other response from you.

Your on here trumpeting for a high seed with your opinions but don't like it when I give mine off of the games my sons team played against 2 of the teams in the mix.

Ugly Tournament

This was a difficult season in one way. It was a great year for 1A Hockey, Unfortunately it may not carry over to the state tournament. Sections were great.

1. EGF eliminated #3 Warroad in double OT
2. Hermantown beat #5 Marshall
3. Breck was upset by Orono

#7 Mankato West was eliminated by #6 New Prague.
#8 Totino-Grace beat #9 Mahtomedi
10. St. Cloud Cathedral survived.

This tournament was always going to probably be a 3 team race and with Breck losing, the field really suffered. Many of the other teams that could have competed already lost to elite teams and leaving some holes in the tournament.

Imagine how much fun this tournament could have been:

The 1A tournament I'd have loved to see would have been
1. EGF
2. Hermantown
3. Warroad
4. Breck
5. Duluth Marshall
Play in games between New Prague v Duluth Denfield
Mankato West V Mahtomedi
Luverne v Totino Grace

Don't get me wrong, I don't feel sorry for Breck, they lost to a lower ranked team. In this feild a team like TRF would be difficult to beat.

While I get the history of the Section system and the natural rivalry, if you really wanted the best feild for the 1A tournament they should scrap the Section system and rank teams for post season.

IMO, It will never happen, because everyone wants to give teams a chance to make it to the tournament. But clearly the top teams played in three sections this season, making the section tournaments in 7A and 8A probably more difficult than the State Tournament.

It is interesting, but at the same time, the metro sections go through this most every year (good teams not making it).

And trf would still struggle, even with this field. Weak forwards, both on offense and defense.

Wondering how come nobody told me
All that I was looking for was somebody
Who looked like you.

I've got a feeling, that keeps me on my toes

I've got a feeling, I think that everybody knows
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah.
Yeah, yeah, I've got a feeling, yeah.

Ev'rybody pulled their socks up,
Ev'rybody put their foot down.

very nice. but the mshsl is not set up like that for ANY sport much less hockey. Instead they try to represent different geographic regions. Just is the way they do it.
