Gameplay quality steadily increased as the game went on. Blaine took advantage of their opportunities, got excellent play by Harper in net, and maintained their forecheck better than East did.
Despite the close score, East left a lot to be desired this game. Sloppy turnovers led to Blaine goals, and Forbort in particular had a rough game, essentially handing the puck to Blaine for one of the goals and taking a costly penalty late in the 3rd. The vaunted defense broke down way too often, and Cooper was not on top of his game. Despite that, they had their chances. East easily could have stepped on Blaine's throat after coming back to tie the game, but instead they spent several minutes following the goal completely bottled up in their own end. And late in the 3rd, they still had a chance...Max Tardy on a shorthanded breakaway. No East fan could ask for a better situation to get the tying goal, yet the opportunity was wasted.
Call me a cynic, but East does not look like a team that is making a serious title run right now. And with the meat of their schedule now behind them, they really have no major chance to prove otherwise, except maybe for the game against WBL. The talent is there, but they've got a lot of work to do between now and the section tournament.
Karl provided an accurate summary of the game...in addition the game drew a big crowd...with lots of NHL scouts... along with quite a few College and Junior coaches...very electric atmophere the last 2 periods.
This win should give Blaine added confidence for they're future battles with Centennial...and while Bjugstad (SP) made some key plays tonight...a lot of other players stepped up tonight and played they're role...Blaine is a team that has depth...and is well coached (like DE).
Chalk one up for the NWSC

This is the second time I have seen Duluth East play. The first was against Centennial. I thought East played a much better game against Centennial. The game itself was pretty intense. Tonights game, East's turnovers is what hurt them. I thought Blaine had two goals off turnovers. Almost a third. If you were there, you probably know who that was.
On the other hand, this is also the second time I have seen Blaine play. The first was against Edina. Blaine looked much better this game, but Edina can make any good team look bad.
If these two teams played again tomorrow, East could win it. These two teams could "easily" make it to State when they are on. I already had Centennial penciled in for going to State. Not anymore, they will not have an easy path with Blaine in the way! It's a toss up and I can't wait until Jan 17th when they play each other!

yeah great crowd on hand for the game, i saw lots of talent on both ends of the ice.
Bjugstads goal was absolutely DIRTY.
Brodzinski is now gettin some varsity time for the bengals and his effort has been suprising as of late, hes making good plays.
Who was that little guy on Duluth East? man he could really fly on the ice

Sorry, I'm not from Blaine, but I do try and keep track of former SCSU players. Is the Brodzinski you're referring to related to Mike Brodzinski (former SCSU standout, owner of Hockey Zone)?
It's Jonny, a 1993 born sophmore forward, right?

Yep. Jonny B (Mike's son) made the move from JV to HS a couple weeks back, primarily to QB the second PP unit.
My take on the game:
Blaine is a much better team with Bayer and Frischmon paired on the 1st line. They haven't been able to due to injuries and constantly changing line combos. Frischmon did not play vs Edina and it hurt Blaine. He is working thru a leg injury, but actually looked stronger as the game went on. The two of them work very hard to make plays at both ends of the rink.
Blaine's third line saw more ice time in the 2nd and 3rd periods than DE's third line. Blaine's 3 lines had a little more jump in their step down the stretch. In periods 2 and 3, there wasn't a constant matchup of 1st vs 1st and 2nd line vs 2nd line. This really opened up the play for both teams.
DE and Blaine are both 3+ lines deep.

anyone have/remember the shots for either team this game? Just want to see if East was throwing 50 shots at the net again and giving up 15 with 5 goals...

Shots were 25-24 in favor of East.
