I'm not sure how that relates to the question of Woog never recruiting out of the metro area. You could certainly add that in on a discussion of did he recruit the right players, but that wasn't the point being discussed.

It's true, Woog never once went out of the metro for any players. Occasionally he might go as far north as Elk River for a player like Larry Olimb, Robb Stauber, Ryan Kraft, John Brill, Wyatt Smith or Ken Gernander. Or maybe down to Lakeville for a Doug Zmolek or a Steve DeBus. But never any farther.
I think most know where Stauber was from and it's not ER.

In the same right you can say the same about Tony Lucia as he wasnt even in the top 3 players when I saw him his senior year but he has a full ride... Not that you dont have a point but it goes for both coaches and I cant say that I blame them. How do you tell your kid that they are not good enough? That would have to be the hardest thing to do and in my eyes (and I am not yet a father) it would almost be down right cruel as long as he is halfway decent... Just somethin to think about.

I dont think Wyatt Smith was from ER either... I could be wrong but I thought he was from TRF... Also, was Guyer his last class as well? I cant remember but I know he is Greenway/Coleraine...

Dog, I kinda doubt that Lucia visits this "bored", but I'm with you! I also would like to put in my vote for Tyler Landman. This is a kid that "brings his lunch box" to the rink. He is a workhorse--and, he gets results.

Spehar, Miskovich, Hauser... all from the Metro area as well.

ER will take credit for Stauber...

Does Tony Lucia take up a hockey scholarship or does he get one from his dad's contract?

seminn whatever

You sound like you're very close to the Sioux guy and a little upset about what transpired through youth hockey with regards to selects etc.....
Well, check this out,,,...we're not talking about youth hockey here....fact of the matter is had they both played juniors for 2 yrs the Gopher would have had at least a similar college career as the Sioux.
But that's not the way it went and so be it.....

I agree. Offer Landman. He seems to come out of the corners with the biscuit every time. I've seen him score beauties with defencemen hanging on him like christmas tree ornaments .

Woog was the laziest recruiter ever. He just sat back and expected the talent to land in his lap.

There is truth that he focused on the metro.

The only kids that came from outstate where well-known to the whole state or were leading scorers in the state. If Larry Olimb hadn't made such an impression at the State tournament his junior year, Woog probably never would have offered a scholarship to him.

Woog screwed up this program for a long line. Because he was too lazy to recruit Roseau, Warroad, Moorhead.....UND formed a pretty solid pipeline to those communities. Ever since Woog took over 90% of those kids from that area go to UND. Woog also neglected to recruit the Rochester area and CC developed a pipeline. Had Woog put a U of M stamp on the Rochester area, guys like the Stewart brothers and Tom Preissing may have went to the U instead of CC.

I remember reading about how Herb Brooks drove the 8 hours to Roseau the night before the signing period, so that he could be at Neil Broten's doorstep first thing in the morning to sign him.

Do you think Woog would have ever made that effort?

The only quality outstate players Woog got to come here were Olimb (Warroad), Gernander (Greenway), Stauber, Wyatt Smith (Warroad), Spehar (Duluth East), Doug Zmolek (Rochester JM), and Ryan Kraft (Moorhead)......and ALL of those player played great on television in the State Tournament. All the while, there were fantastic players from outstate that never played on that stage and guess what? Woog didn't get them.

Don't even get me started on Woog, He couldn't win the big one in South St. Paul with the Housley brothers, he couldn't win at the U with his choice of talent, he was a plug and play coach, he plugged the kids in and let them play, he couldn't be bothered with developing talent or even working hard to find talent at the U.

As for Tyler Landman, he's the real deal, I've only seen him play like 3 times but everytime that I seen him he came hungry, and brought something special to the party. He won't get the press that some kids get but if he keeps developing he'll show up in the NHL someday

Zinovy-

You obviously have no idea about hockey in general. Did you leave some players such as Corey Millen, Ryan Kraft, Jeff Nielsen, Grant Bischoff, and Cory Laylin. I am sure I have missed a few.

A college team has only a certain amount of players they can bring in each year. Right now their team would be a little different if they had these players playing; Mike Carman (grades), Jimmy O'Brien, Alex Goligoski, Erik Johnson, Kyle Okposo (leaving), Stoa (IR), Bostrom (injured). Look at the future recruiting classes. The Gophers landed Ness and Leddy, but not Mattson from Chaska. There is not room for all 3 players. The Gophers landed Taylor Matson, Jordan Schroeder, Zach Budish, Jake Hansen, but not Fink and Danny Mattson. Here again there is not room for everyone. The Gophers also have a stud coming in from Wisconsin and out east.

You are probably the same person that rips the gophers for recruiting Frazee. When at the time he was the top goaltender in the country.

they should have landed danny Matson he will be a stud.
gophers keep losing all their leadership talent lucia has one of the easiest jobs when it comes to recruiting but he has just been developing them for the next level and not winning in tourney play.
gophers are getting only top end players and they can only roster so many i just think matson will turn out to be a player that will kill the gophs

Ryan McDonagh and Danny Matson are best players the Gophers didn't land.

I would agree with Matson and Mcdoungh his other two misses are Aaron Crandall (the best Senior goalie in the state) and Derek Stepan from Shattuck (a first or second rounder in June NHL draft. But Donny can not get them all.

I think the Gophers need to get more gritty players. I like Hanson becuase he's tough and can score, I love Schroeder because he is Schroeder but Matson? He is not a phemoninal player, his potential lies as a third line guy with checking duties but from what I have seen he is very disinterested in doing that. I think they need to get more guys like Troy Riddle or Grant Potulny and less that are like Kessel and Wheeler. Sure Wheeler and Kessel are amazing talents but they aren't the kinda guys that win national championships. It seems like every year we just pick the most skilled guys/

This isn't saying much. Tony Lucia is a marginal player, Woog's 2nd son was a sub-marginal player.
